Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva High School for Boys (commonly referred to as DRS) is a Jewish high school in Woodmere, New York. It is the official high school of the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach. DRS was founded in 1997 and has a student body of over 300 students. The school is overseen by Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky.

History

DRS was established in 1997 as the official high school for HALB. Its original building was an old synagogue in Lawrence, New York. In 2002, the school moved to a new building in Woodmere, New York. The first ever Freshman class of the school (Class of 2001) had an enrollment of 27 students. By 2005, the freshman class had 69 students, and in 2015 that number went up to 88. In 2016, DRS had its accreditation renewed by the Middle States Association.[2]

Philosophy

DRS is a Jewish, Modern Orthodox day-school.[3] DRS employs a dual-curriculum in which the students spend half the day studying Jewish subjects and the other half devoted to secular education. Both are taken very seriously; the overwhelming majority of DRS alumni attend college following high school, and several have won awards from the National Merit Scholarship program.[4][5][6][7] Many DRS alumni have received rabbinical ordination (“semikhah”) from Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, including 15 alumni in 2013,[8] and 16 in 2017.[9] DRS as an institution is very pro-Israel. Student coalitions attend AIPAC conventions to lobby politically on behalf of Israel.[10] DRS often hosts Israeli soldiers, including Gilad Shalit,[11] to talk to students. They also hold pro-Israel events including Yom Haatzmaut[12] and Yom Yerushalayim celebrations.[13]

Demographics

DRS has 363 students,[14] all of whom are Jewish males from Jewish-Orthodox families. The school is located in Woodmere, New York and is the official high school of Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, but receives students from nineteen feeder schools in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn Counties.[2] Transportation is provided to students who live further away from the school.[15] A local newspaper claimed that 95% of DRS graduates attend beit medrash (advanced religious studies) after high school and 99% go to Israel for a gap-year.[16]

Staff

DRS has a total staff of 57 people. Of that group, 19 are rabbis and 26 teach secular classes (some do both). The main administration is headed by six people:

  • Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky- Menahel (Principal) of the school and Rosh Yeshiva of HALB
  • Dr. Hillel Broder- Principal of General Studies
  • Rabbi Elly Storch- Associate Principal
  • Rabbi Aryeh Yudin- Dean of Students
  • Rabbi Eli Brazil- Director of Student Activities
  • Rabbi Natan Farber- Director of Student Life[17]

Curriculum

DRS has school beginning with morning prayers at 7:55, and ending at 5:50. The school has Talmud from 9:10-11:10, followed by a mix of Jewish and secular classes. DRS offers classes in English, Math, Science, Hebrew, Mandarin, Spanish, History, Psychology, Computer Science and more. Additionally, DRS offers 15 Advanced Placement classes which students can take for college credit.[18]

Athletics

DRS has teams for a variety of sports. Most sports have a single team, while basketball, floor-hockey, and softball have a Junior Varsity team for 9th and 10th graders as well as a Varsity team for 11th and 12th grade. In all, DRS boasts 13 teams which compete in basketball, floor hockey, bowling, fencing, softball, tennis, wrestling, soccer, flag football, and volleyball.[19] Many DRS teams have been very successful in the leagues in which they play. The Varsity hockey team won the championship of the Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Athletic League (MYHSAL) Hockey league in the year 2001 in the school’s 4th year of existence. Since then, they have added 4 more league championships, most recently in 2017.[20] The JV team has won 4 more.[21] Between the 2 teams, DRS has had a hockey team in the league finals for 13 consecutive seasons.[22] Floor hockey is a major part of teenage life in the Jewish-metropolitan area and DRS’s students take the sport very seriously.[23] The basketball team has also seen its fair share of success. The Varsity team won its first MYHSAL championship in 2013[24] and JV won in 2014.[25] In 2016, led by coach Avrum Stein, the Varsity team went undefeated in regular season and tournament play, winning the league championship, Magen David preseason tournament, the Cooper Invitational in Memphis, HAFTR's Satran Memorial Tournament and the Sarachek Tournament.[26] The Volleyball team also won its first championship in 2016.[27]

Extracurriculars

DRS also has several academic teams. DRS has a College Bowl team, a debate team (which has been considered to be one of the best debate teams in the country), a math team, and a mock trial team. DRS also has students who participate in the Intel Social Science Competition, which gives students the opportunity to receive national recognition for their social science research projects. Another competition which DRS students partake in is the Jerusalem Science Contest. The contest includes four rigorous months of study, classes and tests involving both science and Judaic studies. DRS also has students participate in Model Congress and Model UN. DRS also has a Torah Bowl team which tests student’s knowledge of Bible as well as Rashi’s commentary. DRS also has students who participate in a Science Olympiad. Additionally, DRS has a political publication called "The DRS Dispatch," which is the official school newspaper of the school, and a scientific publication, "Out Of The Box."[19]

Lev Shlomo

DRS also has a post-high school program called Yeshivat Lev Shlomo. The program was started in 2009 for alumni attending colleges that don’t offer Judaic studies.[28] Lev Shlomo provides the students with a Judaic studies curriculum and schedule in the morning, so they can attend college classes in the afternoon. Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky serves as the Rosh Hayeshiva. Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz fills the role as the Menahel and Senior Maggid Shuir. Rabbi Yoni Levin acts as the other Maggid Shuir. Rabbi Aryeh Cohen is the Mashgiach Ruchani of the Yeshiva. It was officially closed in 2016. [29]
