Miami-based restaurant, nightlife and hospitality entrepreneur David Grutman operates LIV, Story, partner of Komodo, Komodo Lounge and the recently opened OTL[1] and Planta.[2] He is credited by Rolling Stone magazine as being one of the most important people in electronic dance music.

Life and career

Grutman was raised in a Jewish family[3] in Naples, Florida and attended the University of Florida.[4] At age 21, he moved to Miami, Florida and worked as a bartender in South Beach.[5] Next, he worked in marketing at firms Tantra and the Opium Group.[6]

He was the CEO and operating partner of Miami Marketing Group (MMG), which he co-founded in 2008.[7][8] MMG became MMG Nightlife after Grutman was asked to run the nightclub in Jeff Soffer’s billion-dollar revamping of the Fontainebleu Hotel.[4] He also owns the nightclub Story in South Beach, and the LIV Sun Life Stadium.[6][7]

Grutman reportedly discovered Electronic dance music (EDM) in Ibiza and began playing it at LIV, which helped take the club from $25 million to $40 million in revenue and positioned it as one of the foundational mainstream EDM venues in the United States.[9] By 2013, the nightclub was the 5th most profitable nightclub in the United States, making between $45 and $60 million that year.[10]

In 2014, Rolling Stone magazine listed Grutman on their 50 Most Important People in EDM, ranking him at number 11.[11]

Grutman made his foray into the culinary industry with the December 2015 opening of Komodo, a pan-Asian restaurant located in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami.[12] His second restaurant, OTL, opened in the Miami Design District in January 2017.[1] In 2018, he opened the plant-based restaurant Planta South Beach on Miami Beach.[2]

In 2018, ten years after making his mark on the South Florida entertainment scene with Miami Marketing Group (MMG), David Grutman announced the launch of Groot Hospitality, encompassing his distinct trademark hospitality ventures. Combining all of Grutman’s venues under one umbrella, Groot Hospitality's portfolio includes LIV (2009), Story (2012), Komodo (2015), OTL (2017), and Planta (2018).
