David F. Levine is a physical therapy professor and biomedical scientist, holding the Walter Cline Chair of Excellence in Physical Therapy at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.[1][2] His research and publication contributions focus on veterinary rehabilitation and physical therapy, including canine physical therapy[3][4], animal assisted therapy, gait analysis and motion analysis, the use of modalities such as electrical stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound, as well as clinical infectious disease research.[5]

Education

Dr. Levine received a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of New England in 1986. He continued his education at Boston University where he received his M.S. in orthopedic physical therapy in 1990. After receiving his M.S., Levine received his PhD from the University of Tennessee in exercise science in 1994.

Professional career

Career history

He began his professional career as a physical therapist in 1986, and has continued practicing throughout his professional career. In 1990, he accepted a position at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as a professor in the physical therapy department, a position he currently still holds. He is actively involved in the enhancement and betterment of the university.[6][7] He is also an integral member of the University's Research Interest Group on Clinical Infectious Disease Control. This team of faculty, students, and local partners investigate the efficacy of disease control in various local clinical settings, making the laboratory work for the real world.[8] Watch this video for more information on the group and its work.

In addition to teaching at UTC, Levine has been an integral part in the development of canine rehabilitation and physical therapy.[3] He has held adjunct positions at the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee and NC State since 2001 and 2003, respectively. He also currently co-chairs the University of Tennessee's Certificate Program in Canine Rehabilitation, which is one of only two such programs available in the United States.[9][10][11][12][13] It offers certification for physical therapists, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and physical therapy assistants. There is no accreditation available for this growing field, but both programs are "included in the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE), which is the industry standard for veterinary continuing education."[14]

Dr. Levine, co-chair of TEDxChattanooga[15]

He has recently become involved with the TEDx programs. Dr. Levine is an active member on the TED website, engaging in conversations on various TED talks.[16] He is one of the co-chairs of the TEDx conference that took place at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga titled, "Now What?".[17] The TEDx conference took place on October 25, 2014 on the campus of UTC.[18] Twelve speakers presented about various topics to an audience of 100 that was selected by a selection committee from a pool of applicants. The talks were streamed online and also in auditoriums on UTC's campus. Dr. Levine played a vital part in the organization and execution of UTC's first TEDx event.[19] With Dr. Levine's continued leadership, the TEDxChattanooga organization held their latest event, which took place in February 2016.[20] Both the 2014 and 2016 events sold out. In September 2017, he co-organized a third TEDx event in Chattanooga at Baylor School with TEDxBaylorSchool.[21]

Dr. Levine has worked with the DogTV television channel in giving special talks about the interaction of how animals can benefit human health,[22][23] and has also been featured on WDEF-TV channel 12 in Chattanooga in a news story on animal assisted therapy.[24]

Dr. Levine is on the editorial board for PeerJ, which is an award-winning biological and medical science journal[25], as well as Frontiers in Veterinary Science.[26] He is also an associate member of the allied health research unit at the University of Central Lancashire.[27]

He was an international key note speaker at the 2015 Connect Physiotherapy Conference that was hosted by the Australian Physiotherapy Association in Australia.[28][29]

APTA Work

Dr. Levine is active member in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). He has written home study courses for the APTA Orthopedic Section—including Biomechanics of Gait: Hip and Biomechanics of Gait: Knee—and was the subject matter expert for Basic Science for Animal Physical Therapists.[30][31] He is currently the vice chair of the Evidence Based Practice Special Interest Group (EBP SIG), which is housed under the APTA Section on Research.[32] The EBP SIG has created curriculum guidelines for physical therapy schools around the nation, available here.

In 2018, he was honored as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association (FAPTA).[33] This is the association's highest membership category, awarded to members who have "demonstrated unwavering efforts to advance the physical therapy profession for more than 15 years, prior to the time of nomination."[34]
