David Every Constant

David Every Constant (16 June 1930 in London,[1] October 9, 2016[2]) was an English clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Leeds.

Biography

After completing his studies, he studied at Christ's College, Cambridge (Master of Arts) and at the University of London (educational science) at St Edmund's College, Ware, and studied philosophy and theology. On 12 June 1954 he received the priest ordination by the Archbishop of Westminster Bernard Griffin. He subsequently worked as a teacher and lecturer at Christ's College, London University, and St Edmund's College. After further educational positions, he became director of the Westminster Religious Education Centre in 1970.

Pope Paul VI appointed him as auxiliary bishop in Westminster and titular bishop of Betagbarar on 28 March 1977. The Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal George Basil Hume, gave him the bishop's ordination on the 25th of that year; co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Westminster Gerald Mahon and Victor Guazzelli.

He was appointed bishop of Leeds by Pope John Paul II on 12 July 1985 and was admitted to the office on 25 September. He held numerous offices in the Episcopal Conference of England and Wales. Pope John Paul II accepted his health-related resignation on 7 April 2004.

For his work, he was honored with the honorary doctorate of the Leeds Metropolitan University in 2004 and the University of Bradford in 2006. He is the author of the Bishop Konstant Catholic Multi Academy Trust, an educational initiative in the Diocese of Leeds.
