After graduating from Mountview Drama School, Cunningham began his career as an actor working in repertory theatres across the country, most notably at Chichester Festival Theatre.[2][3] Over the years he has appeared in a number of plays in the West End, most significantly as Kenny in "Man of the Moment", written and directed by Alan Ayckbourn with Michael Gambon; Bravo in "Circe & Bravo", directed by Harold Pinter with Faye Dunaway; Tom Jnr in "Sweet Bird of Youth", directed by Harold Pinter with Lauren Bacall; and Morris in "Present Laughter", directed by Richard Olivier with Peter Bowles.[4] He also appeared in several TV series such as The Bill, Howards Way, and Late Expectations, and the film Friend or Foe.

He set up his own theatre company, Andelain Productions, and produced and directed a No.1 tour of a new play, Up in the Gallery, the story of Marie Lloyd, with Adrienne Posta, John Altman and Jack Douglas.

Cunningham set up Cunninghams Conference & Events in 1998 and the video/DVD production side of the business grew into Cunninghams Productions.[5] He has written, directed and produced a variety of DVDs from training to promotional, for clients such as Alliance & Leicester, Avis and Budget Rent a Car, Intercontinental Hotels Group, GreenCone and London City Airport.[6][7]

Cunningham started writing for the big screen in 2011 with Retribution, based on the one act play Obeying Orders, written by Stefan Dubois, which had won the best play award at the 2010 Leatherhead Festival.[8][9] He has written two other screenplays, Highland Fling with Steve Walker and The Letter with Mark Hatwood. He is currently working on two ideas for television, one with Walker and the other with journalist Philippa Kennedy OBE, called The News'.
