Daut Haradinaj

Daut Haradinaj (born 6 April 1978) is a Kosovo Albanian politician, the brother of Ramush Haradinaj, and former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) member during the Kosovo War (1998–99). He was part of the leadership in the Kosovo Protection Corps.

Haradinaj was born on 6 April 1978, as one of nine children, in the village of Glođane, near Dečani, in the Kosovo province that was part of the Serbian republic and Yugoslav federation. His paternal descent is from Berishë in northern Albania, around the city of Pukë.[1] Daut and his brothers Ramush, Luan and Shkelzën were members of the KLA, a separatist guerrilla organization that attacked the Yugoslav government. The latter two brothers were killed in action. After the war, the Haradinaj family became "one of the most powerful crime clans in Kosovo".[2] Serbian newspapers allege that the clan, led by Ramush and Daut, organize arms smuggling through Serbia.[2] In 2001, Daut was blacklisted by the US State Department on suspicion he participated in insurgency in Macedonia.[3] The first indictment by the Kosovo Specialist court regarding KLA war crimes will be against Daut Haradinaj.[3] The crimes in question are an attack on a police station which left a policeman dead, and intimidation and murder of Serbs and ethnic Albanians loyal to the government.[3] He has been linked to Al-Qaeda.[3] The CIA reported that he met with Osama Bin Laden in Albania, as guests of President Sali Berisha.[3] Daut Haradinaj has threatened to expel (ethnically cleanse) Serbs from Kosovo if his brother Ramush is extradited to Belgrade.[4]
