Danijel Milićević (Bosnian pronunciation: [dǎnijel milîːtɕeʋitɕ]; born 5 January 1986) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Belgian First Division A club Eupen and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Milićević started his professional career in Switzerland, where he played for Lugano and Yverdon. He then moved to Belgium and played for Eupen, Charleroi and Gent. In 2018 he had a loan spell at Metz. Later that year he returned to Eupen.

A former Swiss youth international, Milićević made his senior international debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016.

Club career

Early career

Milićević played for two teams in his home country Switzerland, before moving to Belgium. He played mostly in second division.[2]

Milićević's first foreign team was Eupen. He signed for them in January 2009 and helped the team win promotion to the Belgian First Division A.[3] When Eupen got relegated, Milićević moved to Charleroi in the summer of 2011, who were also playing in Belgian First Division B.[4] After one season, Charleroi were promoted by winning the league, with Milićević attracting the interest of bigger clubs.[5]

Gent

Milićević transferred to Gent in January 2014.[6] He made his debut later that month, coming off the bench against Kortrijk.[7]

He scored his first goals, a brace, against Zulte Waregem on 17 August 2014.[8] Milićević won his first trophy with Gent in May 2015, as they were crowned league champions for the first time in their history.[9] He was also instrumental in Gent's first UEFA Champions League campaign, as the team reached round of 16, eventually losing out to VfL Wolfsburg.[10]

On 29 January 2016, he signed a new three-year contract with the club.[11] In a match against Club Brugge on 2 April 2017, Milićević played his 100th league game for Gent.[12] He scored first hat-trick of his career on 20 September 2017, against Geel in Belgian Cup.[13]

On 5 January 2018, Milićević was signed on loan until the end of the season by French side Metz, with an option to make the transfer permanent.[14]

Eupen

In June 2018, Milićević signed a two-year deal with Eupen, sealing his return to the club whose captain's armband he once wore.[15] He made his competitive debut for the club on 4 August against Charleroi.[16]

International career

Milićević was eligible to represent three nations on senior level: Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, having played for Switzerland on youth levels.[17] In 2015, he expressed his desire to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina under Mehmed Baždarević.[18]

In June 2016, FIFA gave Bosnia and Herzegovina its approval to select Milićević.[19] As a result, in August 2016, he was named in Bosnia's squad for a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier with Estonia,[20] against whom he made his official debut, and provided an assist for the fourth goal in a 5–0 victory.[21]

Personal life

Danijel's family is from Ugljevik, Bosnia and Herzegovina.[22]
