Daniel Andrew Kohl (born September 16, 1965) is an American lawyer, political activist, Wisconsin congressional candidate, and former NBA executive. Dan was a Senior Advisor with BakerHostetler’s government practice group and is currently a candidate for Democratic nominee for Congress of Wisconsin's 6th congressional district in 2018. In his past roles, he served as the assistant general manager and the Player Personnel Director for the Milwaukee Bucks, and more recently as the VP of Political Affairs and Political Director for J Street and Wisconsin’s Director of New Schools Development for the SEED Foundation.

Professional career

Milwaukee Bucks

In 1992, Kohl joined the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks as a salary cap specialist and college scout. In 1998, he was named the team’s assistant director of player personnel, and in 2000 he was promoted to director of player personnel. In 2003 he was promoted to Assistant General Manager. On May 9th, 2006, Kohl officially announced that he would be leaving the Bucks.[1].

BakerHostetler

Dan was a Senior Advisor with BakerHostetler’s government practice group. In that role, he has represented the Children’s Hospital Association and Major League Baseball.[2]

Political activism

From 2009-2011, Dan served as the political director for J Street, and from 2011-2012, he was the VP – political affairs. Currently, he is a member of the board there. He was a 2017 recipient of J Street’s Tzedek V’Shalom Award[3].

Dan has served on the boards of the American Jewish Committee, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, the Milwaukee Jewish Day School, and Washington Hebrew Congregation.

Dan served as the SEED Foundation’s Wisconsin Director of New Schools Development and has served on the boards of the Columbia-St. Mary's Foundation, the COA Youth and Family Center Board, and the Wisconsin Historical Society Foundation[3].

Political campaigns

Dan served on the National Finance Committees of John Kerry, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton[3]. He also ran as a candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2008, but was ultimately unsuccessful.[4]

On June 6, 2017, Dan announced that he would be running for US Congress, competing with Wisconsin 6th District incumbent Glenn Grothman.[3]

Personal life

Dan has a wife, Stacy Kohl, and three kids: Samantha, Ben, and Adam. His uncle, Herb Kohl, is the former owner of the Milwaukee Bucks and a former Senator from Wisconsin[3].

He graduated from Brown University in 1987 with a BA in American Civilization, graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1992 with a Doctorate of Law, and earned a Master of Arts in History 1996 from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
