Daniel Arrigg Koh (born January 1, 1985) is an American Democratic politician. He served as the Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Boston from 2014 to 2017, leaving that role to seek election to the United States House of Representatives.[1]

Career

Koh interned for Senator Ted Kennedy as a high school student and through his undergraduate years. He later worked as an advisor for Boston mayor Tom Menino, where he focused on the mayor’s summer jobs program.[2] Koh worked in executive search and management consulting at Booz Allen Hamilton, and ultimately landing at the Huffington Post where he held a variety of roles. After serving as Chief of Staff to Arianna Huffington, he became the first General Manager for Huffington Post Live.[3] Marty Walsh was elected Boston mayor in November 2013, and selected Koh as his Chief of Staff.[3] On August 16, 2017, Koh announced his departure from the Office of the Mayor to launch a candidacy for the U.S. Congress in Massachusetts's 3rd congressional district.[4]

2018 Congressional run

In the primary election held on September 6, 2018, Koh finished second in a field of 10 candidates, seeking the Democratic nomination for the seat of Niki Tsongas, who did not seek re-elecion.[5] Koh and first place finisher Lori Trahan were separated by 122 votes, less than one half of one percent of the 88,800 votes cast. Koh subsequently requested a recount,[5] which confirmed Trahan's victory.[6]

Personal life

Koh grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 2003, and then attended Harvard University. He is of Korean and Lebanese descent, and his family is involved in Democratic politics. His father is Howard Kyongju Koh, who served as Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services under Barack Obama. Koh married Amy Sennett on June 23, 2016, in a ceremony at Boston City Hall.[7]
