Dadheech Brahmins

The Dadheech Brahmins, also spelled Dadhich and sometimes known as the Dahima, are a subgroup of Brahmins in India who claim to be descendants of Rishi Dadhichi. They are one of the six groups of Brahmins from the Marwar region, the other ones being the Gauds, Pareeks, Saraswats, Sikhwals and Khandelwals.[1]

The Dadhich Brahmins have had gotras from Rishi names since at least as early as 610 CE. Their gotra Shakhas (Khampas) include Gothecha, Mangalodya, Asopa, Inanya, Khatoda, Borada, and Didawanya. They are named after their ancient villages or localities. Their clan goddess is known as Dadhimati.[2]

Dadhichi-Jayanti, the birth date of Rishi Dadhichi, is celebrated each year among Dadhich Brahmins by the offering of prayers to the Gods, the organisation of Kirtans and havans in temples and also sports events for children.[3][4][5]

The Dadhich Brahmin community has been proactive in putting efforts against prevalent social malpractices such as death feasts.[6] They are also putting organised efforts in increasing awareness on environment conservation.[7][8][9][10]
