The DR1 diesel-electric trainset was manufactured by Rīgas Vagonbūves Rūpnīca from 1963 for suburban commuter usage within the Soviet Union. In 2017 DR1 trainsets (different modifications) are still in use in Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. They remained in use by Edelaraudtee in Estonia until 2014.

Modifications

DR1 1st batch Introduced from 1963. From set DR1-01 to DR1-08 the shape of nose was rounded and looked alike ER1 EMU. All of them are scrapped now.

DR1 2nd batch DR1-09 set introduced from 1966. Some of sets named DR1M. Nose shape is completely different. From set DR1A-014 new headlights installed. Sets with older headlights withdrawn. Newer versions still in service as departmental units in Russia, in Belarus all of them converted to DRB1m. DR1 have numbers DR1-09 to DR1-053 (excluding DR1-030 which is DR1P).

DR2 Modification of DR1 2nd batch equipped with engines installed under the carriage instead of being installed between behind the cab. Only one prototype built in 1966.

DR1P In prototype DR1P-030 built in 1969 new engines installed. In mass production from DR1P-054 set. DR1P have numbers DR1P-054 to DR1P-122 and DR1P-400 to DR1P-404. Almost all of them withdrawn.

DR1B1/DR1B1m/DR1pT Refurbished DR1/DR1P sets for Belarus Railways. Equipped with driving trailer carriages having the same design as DR1AM's driving trailers. Scrapped driving motor carriages replaced by 2M62/2M62U diesel locomotives.

DR1A 1st batch Prototype DR1A-405 built in 1973. In mass production from DR1A-123 set built in 1976. Still in service in some post-USSR countries. In Russia were completely withdrawn (the last set delivered to Samara rail museum in 2012).

DR1A 2nd batch Prototype DR1A-168 built in 1977 had completely different nose shape. However, its mass production started only after dissolution of the Soviet Union with few headlight changes. Still in service in some post-USSR countries. In Russia were completely withdrawn because of introduction of RA2 railbuses (the last set delivered to Kaliningrad rail museum in 2016).

DR6 Trainset based on DR1A 2nd batch built in 1990 to Cuba Railways. Has several improvements.

DR1AM Refurbished DR1A sets of Georgian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Ukrainian railways. Formation reduced from 5-6 to 3 cars per trainset. Equipped with new driving trailer carriages converted from trailer carriages in 1990s. Both batches of DR1A were refurbished, however, driving trailer always rebuilt in 2nd batch style.

DR1B of 500 series Newer trainsets built to Belarus Railways with improved design. Equipped with driving trailer carriages. They were officially named DR1B of 500 series to prevent being confused with DR1B.

DR1B Refurbished DR1A sets of Estonian Railways with original formation. In Estonia were completely withdrawn because of introduction of Stadler Flirt and the end of Go Rail international services, some trainsets sold to Kazakhstan.

DR1BJ Refurbished DR1A sets of Estonian Railways. Formation reduced from 5-6 to 3 cars per trainset. Equipped with new driving trailer carriages converted from trailer carriages in 1990s. Both batches of DR1A were refurbished. Unlike the DR1AM, driving trailer has design looks alike later versions of ER2/ER9 EMUs

DR1AC Refurbished DR1A sets of Latvian Railways. After being refurbished they are exactly the same as DR1B of 500 series.

DRL1/MDP Refurbished DR1A sets of Belarus Railways. Formation reduced from 5-6 to 3 cars per trainset. Equipped with new driving trailer carriages converted from trailer carriages in 1990s. Both batches of DR1A were refurbished, however, driving trailer always rebuilt in 2nd batch style. Unlike the DR1AM sets, driving trailers converted from driving motor carriages, not trailers.

AR1/AR2 A railbus based on DR1A design, but equipped with engines installed under the carriage instead of being installed between behind the cab like DR2 do.

In service

Belarus As of 2017, some DR1P sets are still in service. All of DR1 and some of DR1P and DR1A were converted to DR1B1/DR1B1m/DR1pT or DRL1/MDP. These conversions are still in service. Some of DR1B of 500 series sets are used in international services to Lithuania.

Cuba It is uncertain, whether its only one set DR6 is in service, or not. Any information about it is outdated.

Estonia As of 2017, no DR1 units or its modifications are in service. Their commuter operator, Edelaraudtee (Southwestern Railway) is defunct (all commuter routes are now served by Elron which uses Stadler Flirt DMUs). Some DR1B/BJ sets were sold to Kazakhstan. From 2012 to 2015 another DR1B/BJ operator, GoRail, provided international services to Saint Petersburg. This route has been also closed due to lack of passengers.

Georgia As of 2017, 1 DR1AM is in service.

Kazakhstan As of 2017, several DR1B/BJ bought in Estonia sets are in service. Original DR1A sets delivered in USSR period are almost all scrapped.

Latvia As of 2017, the most of DR1A or DR1AM sets are still in service, some of them underwent conversion into DR1AC.

Lithuania As of 2017, the most of DR1A or DR1AM sets are still in service.

Russia As of 2017, DR1 sets and its modifications are only in departmental use, not in passenger services. DR1A sets were withdrawn from Samara commuter services in 2012 (after that the last set was delivered to rail museum) and from Kaliningrad commuter services in 2016 (even new batches were withdrawn, after that the last set was delivered to rail museum, too).

Ukraine As of 2017, some of DR1P/DR1A/DR1AM sets are still in use. Some of DR1 and its modifications were abandoned after Chernobyl disaster, still could be found at Yanov station.

Formations

Different combinations of carriages are possible:

Original For every trainset before being refurbished Driving motor - Trailer - Trailer - Trailer - Trailer - Driving motor (3 to 5 trailers)

Revised For DR1AM/DR1BJ/DRL1/MDP Driving trailer - Trailer - Driving motor

In Soviet Union communter trains hadn't got 1st or 2nd class seats, every seats were equal. GoRail's DR1B sets were equipped with space for bicycles (like Western Europe's trains).

In Culture

A diesel locomotive in City 17 of Half-Life 2 computer game looks like a DR1A's driving motor car, but with several differences, designated as ESD4.
