Croatian military ranks

The Croatian military ranks are the military insignia used by the Republic of Croatia Armed Forces.

Officer ranks

Labels ranks for members of the Croatian Ground Army and Croatian Air Force and Defense are identical, except that the ranks of the Ground Army are gold and of the Air Force and Defense are silver.

The rank insignia for commissioned officers for the army, navy and air force respectively.

Etymology

  • Časnik - derived from čast (honour), and indicating "one who is honoured", i.e. with a commission, or "one who holds (the) honour".
  • Dočasnik - after two Croatian words, do (by) and čast (honour). The one who stands by the officer, the one who is subordinate to an officer.
  • Pozornik - after Croatian word pozor (attention). The one who follows the order pozor.
  • Razvodnik - after Croatian verb razvoditi. The one who leads.
  • Skupnik - after Croatian noun skup (group). The one who leads the group.
  • Desetnik - after Croatian number deset (ten). The one who leads ten men.
  • Narednik - after Croatian noun naredba (order). The one who orders.
  • Nadnarednik - after two Croatian words, nad (above) and naredba (order). The one who is above narednik.
  • Stožerni narednik - after two Croatian words, stožer (headquarters, staff) and naredba (order). The one who is a narednik to serve in the army staff.
  • Časnički namjesnik - after two Croatian words, časnik (officer) and namjesnik (governor). The one who governs as an officer.
  • Poručnik - after Croatian word poruka (message), the messenger.
  • Natporučnk - the one who is above poručnik.
  • Satnik - after old Croatian sat (hundred). The one who leads the group of hundred men.
  • Bojnik - after Croatian noun boj (battle). The one who leads the battle.
  • Pukovnik - after Croatian noun pukovnija (regiment) (this word came from puk which means folk). The one who leads the regiment.
  • Brigadir - after word brigada (from French brigade). The one who leads a brigade.
  • Brigadni general - a general of the brigade.
  • Kapetan korvete - captain of the corvette.
  • Kapetan fregate - captain of the frigate.
  • Kapetan bojnog broda - captain of the battleship.
