Founded in 1972 by Debbie Eason, the paper was purchased by SouthComm Communications in 2012.[2] In 2017, SouthComm sold the paper to Ben Eason.[3]

Creative Loafing’s publisher is Sharry Smith, a 25-plus year veteran of the newspaper. Prior to becoming the publisher of CL Atlanta, Smith held ad director and publisher positions at Creative Loafing Tampa.
