Council on Foundations

The Council on Foundations, founded in 1949, is a nonprofit leadership association of grantmaking foundations and corporations. It provides the opportunity, leadership, and tools needed by philanthropic organizations to expand, enhance and sustain their ability to advance the common good. The Council empowers professionals in philanthropy to meet today's toughest challenges and advances a culture of charitable giving in the U.S. and globally.[1]

Mission

The Council on Foundations mission is to provide the opportunity, leadership, and tools needed by philanthropic organizations to expand, enhance, and sustain their ability to advance the common good.

Vision

The Council on Foundations is a strategic leader that raises issues of shared interest, expands the thinking about our field, builds collaborative efforts, and breaks down barriers that stand in the way of effective and dynamic philanthropy.[2]

Leadership

Vikki Spruill is the current president and CEO of the Council on Foundations.[3][4] In March of 2017, she announced she would be leaving the Council to take a position as Chief Executive Officer of the New England Aquarium.[5]

Javier Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation is the current chair of its board of directors.[6][7]

Council on Foundations Awards Program

Every day, Council members stand at the forefront of innovation, exploring creative ways to advance the common good and finding solutions for complex issues. The Council on Foundations Awards Program was established to recognize excellence in philanthropy and to honor exemplary leaders for their dedication to uplift the sector.[8] The Council currently gives these awards:
