Cosimo Commisso (mobster)

Cosimo Commisso (born 6 February 1950 in Siderno), also known as "the quail" ("'u quagghia"), is an Italian criminal and a member of the 'Ndrangheta, a mafia-type organization in Calabria. He belongs to and was the boss of the Commisso 'ndrina based in Siderno with his cousin Antonio Commisso and his brother Rocco Commisso.[1][2][3]

He took over the reins of the clan from his father Francesco Commisso, who had been the right-hand man of the historical 'Ndrangheta boss of Siderno, Antonio Macrì.[1][4]

The Commisso 'ndrina has a branch in Canada, in the Greater Toronto Area, which is part of the wider Siderno Group.[5]

In the 1980s the Buffalo crime family also operated in Toronto and Hamilton, and hired Satan's Choice MC hitman Cecil Kirby to kill Pietro Scarcella and Paul Volpe in an arrangement with Rocco Remo and Cosimo Commisso to gain more control of the market. However, the plot was foiled when Kirby turned Royal Canadian Mounted Police informant.[6][7]

He is described as the most notorious member of the group and its former leader, and is currently serving a life sentence in Italy for his involvement with the 'Ndrangheta.[8] The cousin of "The Quail", Antonio Commisso, was on the list of most wanted fugitives in Italy until his capture on June 28, 2005, in Woodbridge.[1]

On June 28, 2018, Cosimo Ernesto Commisso, of Woodbridge, Ontario and an unrelated female were shot and killed. According to sources contacted by the Toronto Star, "Commisso was related to "The Quail" of Siderno, Italy, who has had relations in Ontario, is considered by police to be a "'Ndrangheta organized crime boss".[9] The National Post reported that Cosimo Ernesto Commisso, while not a known criminal, "shares a name and family ties with a man who has for decades been reputed to be a Mafia leader in the Toronto area".[10]
