The Commissioner of Laws is an office in Malta that has been established by the 1980 Revisions of Statutory Laws Act.[2]

The current commissioner is Franco Debono, whose appointment was widely publicized in media on Malta. His appointment by the Labour Party-administration was lambasted by the Leader of the Opposition Lawrence Gonzi, because his party was not consulted beforehand[3] while others his past as a rebel MP as a reason to pick a "more unifying figure."

According to Labour MP Owen Bonnici, the responsibilities of the post include working to remove conflicting, unconstitutional and human rights-breaching laws.[4]
