Colopus is a genus of geckos, lizards in the family Gekkonidae. The genus is endemic to Southern Africa.
Habitat and geographic range
The species in the genus Colopus are found in the Kalahari desert, in the nation states of Botswana, Namibia, and the Republic of South Africa.
Species and subspecies
The following species and subspecies are recognized as being valid.[1][2][3]
- Colopus kochii (V. FitzSimons, 1959) – Cape Cross thick-toed gecko, Koch’s gecko
- Colopus wahlbergii W. Peters, 1869 – Wahlberg's Kalahari gecko
- Colopus wahlbergii furcifer Haacke, 1976
- Colopus wahlbergii wahlbergii W. Peters, 1869
Nota bene: A binomial authority in parentheses indicates that the species was originally described in a genus other than Colopus.
Etymology
The specific name, kochii, is in honor of Austrian-born South African entomologist Charles Koch.[4]
The specific name, wahlbergii, is in honor of Swedish naturalist Johan August Wahlberg.[4]
