The College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar (CETB) is a premier engineering institution under the state government in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, India.[1][2] Established in 1981 as a constituent college of the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, the college has been a constituent college of Biju Patnaik University of Technology, since 2002. Students are admitted to the college through the Joint Entrance Examination (main) merit list of Government of India. The college is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation and the Government of Odisha has considered granting unitary university status to the college.[3][4][5][6] The college was granted autonomy by University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2017 for a period of 10 years.

CETB is the third technical institution established by the Government of Odisha and has an annual intake of 1400 students. It has received accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation.[7]

The institute is one of two colleges in Odisha to participate in the TEQIP — II project run by the World Bank and the national Ministry of Human Resources Development. Under the program, the institute hosts the following centers of excellence:

  • Modrob project centre

CETB was accredited with an "A" grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in January, 2017. Four UG programmes (Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering) of CETB have been accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) since July, 2016.

A three-year B.Tech degree for diploma holders as lateral entries is offered. All courses are full-time. In the 2014-15 academic year courses started including M.Tech. in every branch, and a 5-year dual degree courses (M.Sc.) along with a 2-year M.Sc. in physics and chemistry.

Each academic year consists of two semesters and a summer term. Education is organised around a credit system, which ensures continuous evaluation of a student's performance and provides flexibility to choose courses to suit the student's ability or convenience. Each course is assigned credits depending upon the class hours.

The Bachelor of Architecture degree is of five-year duration and the rest are of four-years duration. CETB also offers a three-year Master of Computer Applications programme. The typical enrolment is 60 to 120 for each of the programs.[8] The CETB conducts an M.Tech. program in 20 specializations including:

Admission process and examinations

B.Tech. and MCA admission to undergraduate degrees is made through a Joint Entrance Examination conducted each year by the government of Odisha or Joint Entrance Examination (main) merit list of Government of India. Students are eligible to appear for examinations provided they attend a minimum of 75 per cent of their theory, practical, and sessional classes scheduled during the semester.

Central Computing Facility

  • CETB has more than 300 computers with Linux and Windows operating system for use by the students, faculty, and staff.
  • CETB has a second computing facility of 128 computers including servers and workstations to meet the increasing computing demand from the researchers.

Central Internet Facility

CETB has an Internet facility through the National Mission of Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). CETB has overall 20 Mbit/s connection facility via BSNL and NMEICT.

The campus covers the entire Techno-Campus plot and is surrounded by the training school of forest rangers and Bhubaneswar Drinking Water Supply Project Water Storage. A portion of a hill also falls within the campus. Bus no. 333 connects the college to most of the places within the city.

There are playgrounds for cricket and football and courts for basketball, badminton, volleyball and tennis, and a gym. The students' square at the centre of the academic blocks has a stage facility. There are a Syndicate Bank branch and a BSNL telecom tower on campus.

Campus organisations

  • THE SPINNERET is a Technical club of department of Textile Engineering, cet bhubaneswr. this founded by Sri Samir Sathapthy, Suramya mishra, Mr Ajit kumar sahoo, Pritish mishra, Hitendra Singh, and Samyak mohanti. after take in charge by Mr. Ajit Kumar Sahoo (2016-19) elected as President on dated 17- 01-2018. and also this club organise the prjects, events, seminar, workshops, etc
  • CETADEL is the literary, intellectual, and creative society. It conducts events in quizzing, writing, jamming, debating and runs a think tank, Ravinder Kaushik Centre for Policy Research (and security studies). It publishes the annual college magazine, The Engineering Herald.
  • The Amuza is the dramatics society of CET is a group of acting enthusiasts who perform acts based on raging social issues. Amuza performs enactments such as Nukkad Nataks (street play), theatre plays, mimicry, stand-up comedies and mime plays.
  • National Service Scheme.
  • The E-Cell has been instrumental in the startups of students of CET, like Joylab, Brokenscooter.com, NowFloats and many others.
  • VoiX, the debating wing
  • Zairza[9] is the technical society, initiated by students. Founded in 2005 with Software and Manual Robotics as the two main wings, it was made an official event by the college administration in 2007 with addition of Automated robotics.
  • Energy Club deals in energy conservation and power optimization under the Department of Electrical Engineering.
  • The college has an ASME chapter under the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Arpeggio is the music club dealing in vocals, instruments and sound production.
  • The college rock bands, Iris Chants, Shabd and Aroha perform across the state.
  • The college has an automobile club SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)[10] chapter. Blue Jay Racing Team is the official automobile racing team of the college. The team participated in BAJA SAE 2016,2017,2018; EcoKart 2016,2017; Enduro Student India(ESI)2018. The BlueJay Racing Team is currently fabricating an All Terrain Vehicle for ESI 2019.
  • ASME CET-Bhubaneswar Chapter is one of the largest ASME student chapters in the eastern region of India. It was initiated by 4th year and 3rd year students.
  • The ISTE chapter is the largest in Odisha.
  • The Dance Authority is the dance club.
  • Udaan deals with aero modeling.
  • CET Rising is the college blog.
  • Cetquizzite is the official quizzing club of CET. Instituted with a view to promote the spirit of quizzing in young CETians, the club conducts regular sessions and competitions throughout the year.

Scholarships

Most students of CETB receive some form of scholarship. Many are beneficiaries of the CAFAS scholarship scheme which provides INR 10,000 annually. The top 20% students of every class are awarded CET merit scholarship of INR 400 per month. There are also the Alumni scholarship and FFE scholarship worth INR 25,000, and other merit-cum-need scholarships. There are also several scholarships like Prerna Scholarship the SC & ST development department of state government (INR 25,000- INR 50,000) and scholarships the district administration.

Student events

  • Xtasy[11] is the college cultural extravaganza, held in January. This was first started in April 1992 in the form of a techno-cultural convention as X-TASY '92.
  • The Idea Challenge brings together CEOs (e.g. Milk Mantra, Tatwa etc.) to guide students with their start-ups.
  • CETMUN is the annual Model Nations which is recognised by the Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan and organised by CETADEL.
  • SANNIDHYA is the annual technical department event of Civil Engineering Department.
  • Perception is the annual technical festival.
  • samagam is the annual alumni meet of Textile Engineering Department and Fashion & Apparel Technology.
  • The college organizes an annual athletics meet and the Engineers Cup inter-college cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, basketball tournament in December–January.

Unitary university status

It is proposed to elevate the college as a unitary technical university of the state. Biju Patnaik University of Technology has already issued a no-objection certificate regarding the grant of unitary university status.[3][4][5][6][12] The National Board of Accreditation team has visited the college to examine the college for a university status.[13] As one of the first Government Institutes of Odisha, College of Engineering & Technology Bhubaneswar (CETB) has received the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).[14] On October 2016, a fresh memorandum has been sent to Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik to take steps to declare CETB as an unitary university status as Odisha Technological University, Bhubaneswar (OTUB).[15][16]
