Ward Demography
The Coldharbour ward encompasses all of the Brixton area along with Brixton Market. North of the ward is Angell Town, a large estate containing many high rise council dwellings and small, Independent shops. The west of the ward borders Brixton Road. The east of the ward borders Herne Hill, Southwark and Tulse Hill.
Coldharbour Lane is one of the main roads that pass through the ward, with the Somerlayton Road estate also encompassed in the ward alongside more residential, affluent roads located on the south tip of the ward.
The 1981 Brixton riot, the most serious riot in the United Kingdom during the 20th century, started in the ward. The George public house was burnt down and a number of other buildings were damaged along Railton Road.
