ClueKeeper is a GPS location-aware software platform created by a group of puzzle lovers[1] and initially released in January 2008.[2] A simple description is a mix between a puzzle hunt, an escape room and augmented reality.[1]
Creators can develop self-enclosed story files (called "hunts") that are read by the ClueKeeper app, installed on a GPS-enabled smartphone. The player and story take advantage of the location information provided by the GPS to trigger in-game events, such as using a virtual object or interacting with characters. Completing a hunt can require reaching different locations and solving puzzles.
Hunts can be created as Hosted Hunts or Self-Guided Hunts.[3] The former are organized events in which teams compete at the same time. The later are run individually or as teams when they want to do the hunt.
ClueKeeper is used to run the annual international puzzle hunts for D.A.S.H.[4][5] Raven Chase, Shinteki and 30 - 40 others use ClueKeeper to host smaller puzzle hunts.[4][6][7][8]
