Clarence Barracks was a military installation at Portsmouth, Hampshire.

History

The barracks were established as Fourhouse Barracks on land between St Nicholas Street and the fortifications, alongside an earlier Royal Marine Barracks, in 1760.[1] They were renamed Clarence Barracks after the Duke of Clarence who visited the site to present colours to the Royal Marines Light Infantry in 1827.[2] A large parade ground was created[3] and new officers' quarters were added in 1893.[4]

In March 1948 the barracks were converted for use by the Women's Royal Naval Service and were renamed the Duchess of Kent Barracks, after the Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, who was Duchess of Kent and Commandant of the Service.[5] The barracks were decommissioned in the early 1960s and most of the buildings were demolished in 1967.[5] The officers' quarters survived and were acquired for use by the Portsmouth City Museum in 1972.[5]
