Chungmu-gimbap

A dish of Chungmu-gimbap

Chungmu gimbap (충무김밥) is a gimbap made with only rice as the filler ingredient. Originating from the seaside city of Chungmu, the rolls are thinner and the surface is usually left unseasoned.[1] Chungmu gimbap is traditionally served with side dishes of kolddugi muchim (꼴뚜기 무침), sliced baby octopus marinated and fermented in a spicy red pepper sauce, and radish kimchi (무김치).[2] Chungmu gimbap has popularity on Gukpung 81 Festival.

History

Tongyoung also sold ordinary kimbab at first. However, Kimbab was immediately wounded in Tongyeong, where the sunshine was exceptionally hot. So people started to sell rice and side dishes separately and it became a source of chungmu kimbap.

Especially in the 1970s, Chungmu Kimbap was more delicious using the cuttlefish caught in Tongyeong area. Mugimchi was also made with plenty of salted seafood. The reason Chungmu Kimbap became famous nationwide is that it is big in the 'Fatty grandmother of origin' of the playground in Hangnam-dong that participated in the 'large-scale cultural festival(kuk poong81)'.This grandmother brought a lot of chungmu kimbap and promoted it.[3]
