Christopher Kjell Mykles (born October 19, 1986), better known by his nickname MonteCristo, is an e-Sports color commentator and analyst, as well as founder of the E-Sports organization Renegades. He gained prominence as a League of Legends color commentator, analyst and team owner, most notably as an English-language commentator working for OnGameNet, broadcaster of the LCK, formerly named League of Legends Champions, from 2012 through 2016. In addition, he also worked on the broadcast team for the League of Legends World Championship in the years 2013-2015.[1][2] In 2013 and 2014 he was the coach of Counter Logic Gaming. He is currently employed as a shoutcaster for the Overwatch League.

Career

Monte was previously involved with eSports as a volunteer writer for WCReplays, a Warcraft 3 replays site. He began shoutcasting for WCReplays with David "Phreak" Turley and attests that casting came naturally due to his many years of stage performance. During his involvement with Warcraft 3 he managed a professional team with Verge Gaming and joined the Team Sportscast Network, a now defunct eSports shoutcasting organization.[3]

Subsequently he accepted a full-time contract casting position at OnGameNet.[4] On July 24, 2013 he became a coach for Counter Logic Gaming,[5][6] as but still continued to cast for OnGameNet.[2]

On September 5, 2014, MonteCristo left his coaching position at CLG.[7] On June 22, 2015 MonteCristo became a co-owner of LA Renegades.[8]

On May 8, 2016, Riot Games announced that Team Impulse and Renegades were banned from the LCS. Additionally MonteCristo would be banned for all Riot sponsored activities as a team owner or manager for a year, although he could continue casting for those events.[9][10][11] The punishment, the most severe in LCS history, stemmed from charges of not properly disclosing team ownership, misleading player trades, and player mistreatment.[12][13] Renegades later sold their LoL team to Team EnVyUs.

MonteCristo, Erik "DoA" Lonnquist and Christopher "PapaSmithy" Smith declined to commentate at the 2016 Mid-Season Invitational in Shanghai because of a wage dispute with Riot.[14][15][16]

Mykkles is represented by talent agency WME-IMG.[17]

On July 29, 2016, MonteCristo uploaded an hour-long video responding to the Riot ban, and also released a number of documents including player contracts, for public viewing.[18]

In April 2017, MonteCristo and DoA announced they would be moving from South Korea to the United States to serve as shoutcasters for the Overwatch League.[19]
