Christ the King School, Portoviejo, Ecuador, (Unidad Educativa Cristo Rey) began in 1930 as a seminary, run by the Society of Jesus. It grew to be pre-primary through high school, and serves the needier segment of society.[2]

History

The school originated in 1930 as Christ the King Seminary. In 1938 the seminary became Christ the King School at the elementary level. In 1955 Colegio Particular Cristo Rey was created with the baccalaureate in Modern Humanities.[3] By 2005 Christ the King Educational Unit was accredited for students ages 5 through 18, awarding the Bachelor of Science. In 2015 it was authorized to offer also the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.[4]

Programs

Facilities include football, coliseum, Rama sports football, basketball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and swimming.[5]

Students travel to different countries for language studies in French, German, and English.

The school also strives to raise its success rate through use of the EFQM management system that originated in Brussels, Belgium.[6]

Cristo Rey Social Foundation

The Cristo Rey Social Foundation was founded in 2000 as a provider of meals for over 100 of the elderly poor, served in some former Cristo Rey classrooms. Ten students from the 10th through 12th grades serve and clean up. During holiday periods the CEC (Centre Excursionista Capdevielle) helps out.[4] The school also runs a medical center and a physical rehabilitation center.[7]
