Ching-Shih Chen

Ching-Shih Chen is the former Lucius A. Wing Chair of Cancer Research and professor of medicinal chemistry at The Ohio State University (OSU).[1] In 2018, OSU dismissed Chen and released a report on an investigation into scientific misconduct by Chen.[2]

Chen was reported to university officials and the federal Office of Research Integrity after an anonymous email was sent to the university based on suspicion of falsifying data in six research projects. During the investigation, reports of falsification in 15 other projects came about.[3].

Chen blamed postdoctoral fellows and laboratory staff for the issues, but after a university investigation concluded that he falsified data published in at least eight research papers and that they intended to fire him, he admitted to research misconduct.[2][4] The university made the investigation report publicly available.[5] The report found that he engaged in dishonest research practices beginning in 2001 and continuing throughout his career at OSU.[3]

Chen is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2010, he was given the Innovator of the Year award by OSU. The university later determined that the research his award was given for was falsified.[3]

Chen earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin.
