Chernobyl is an upcoming American-British historical drama television miniseries. The show is a co-production between HBO and Sky and is set to premiere in both the United States and the United Kingdom in 2019.[1][2]

Premise

Chernobyl dramatizes "the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history and tells of the brave men and women who sacrificed to save Europe from unimaginable disaster. The miniseries focuses on the heartbreaking scope of the nuclear plant disaster that occurred in Ukraine in April 1986, revealing how and why it happened and telling the shocking, remarkable stories of the heroes who fought and fell."[3]

Development

On July 26, 2017, it was that HBO had given a series order to Chernobyl, their first co-production with Sky Television. The five-episode miniseries was written by Craig Mazin and set to be directed by Johan Renck. Mazin will executive produce alongside Carolyn Strauss and Jane Featherstone, with Chris Fry and Renck serving as co-executive producers.[3][4]

Casting

Simultaneously with the initial series announcement, it was confirmed that Jared Harris would star in the series.[4] On March 19, 2018, it was announced that Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson had joined the main cast.[5]

Filming

Principal photography reportedly began in April 2018 in Lithuania.[4]
