Cherington Park House History
In 1292 the manor house was occupied by the Stephens family and is the earliest record found of the house. By 1740 it was replaced by Cherington Park, built for John Neale. Further developments of three services ranges around the courtyard were built in the 19th century. Along with many other houses that were being demolished after WWII Mr. G. G. Tarlton decided to pull half of it down in 1955. West of the house is a group of out-buildings, mainly stabling and coach-houses. The earliest appears to be of c. 1700. Another range is of the earlier 18th century and the largest block is of the earlier 19th century. Although, the coach house was sold off and subsequently its original drive no longer exists.
Sales of the Park Land date back to 1888 where there was mention of the flower garden, shrubberies and further grounds. By the time of the sale of the estate to the Tarlton family there were records of a bowling green, tennis court and croquet laws, as well as ornamental and productive gardens. The ornamental garden included a formal walled garden with fruit trees. Cherington’s 4.5 acre lake included a boathouse and timbered parkland.
