The Cauvery Derby, also called the South Indian Derby, Namma Derby and the El Clasico of IPL is a sports rivalry between the cricket teams of Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The two teams have played each other 22 times, which includes 20 matches in the IPL and 1 match in the CLT20. The teams have played each other in the IPL league stage 16 times, 3 times in the playoffs and once in the final (2011 IPL) (CSK winning). The 2010 CLT20 meeting in Durban was in a semi final of the league, in which CSK found success. Overall, CSK have won 14 times, RCB have won 7 times, with one match leaving no result. This is the biggest sports rivalry in IPL due to the other issues surrounding the age-old rivalry between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the Kaveri River. Other than being played in Bengaluru and Chennai, this fixture has been played in Port Elizabeth, Durban and Johannesburg when the 2009 IPL was played in South Africa. In India, this fixture has been hosted once in Mumbai and twice in Ranchi.[1][2]

Background

The intensity of this rivalry is also due to political reasons. The two teams are from the neighbouring southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The derby has been named on the unrest over Kaveri River water dispute which has been a topic of intense political fight over many years. The first time these two teams met in IPL was on 28 April 2008 where CSK won by 13 runs. The rivalry is also termed as the South Indian Derby.[3][4][5][6]

On 25 April 2018, after the gap of 3 years since the CSK's ban for involving in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, Chennai Super Kings renewed their rivalry with RCB after facing their arch-rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore in a group league match during the 2018 Indian Premier League season at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.[7][8] Chennai Super Kings registered their fifth victory of the tournament by defeating the rivals by 5 wickets.[9][10][11] The match was considered as a high pressurised match (known as Cauvery Derby) for both of the teams representing the relevant states following the 2018 Cauvery water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.[7]
