Chennai Bangalore Industrial Corridor

Location of Chennai and Bangalore within India

The Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor Project is an upcoming mega infrastructure project of Government of India. The corridor plans to come up along Chennai, Sriperumbudur, Ponnapanthangal, Ranipet, Chittoor, Bangarupalem, Palamaner, Bangarpet, Hoskote and Bangalore. It is expected to boost commerce between south India and east Asia by enabling quicker movement of goods from these places to the Chennai and Ennore ports.

It is one of the five industrial corridors coming up in India under the aegis of National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT).[1]

Connectivity

In his Budget speech, finance minister of India said the project with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will be developed in collaboration with the governments of three southern states. The Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor is being modeled along the $100 billion Delhi-Mumbai (DMIC) industrial corridor.

2 major backbone infrastructure projects will be created for the corridor. Both Road and Rail connectivity for Freight movement will be upgraded in this corridor.

Node 1 : Ponneri (TN)

A Comprehensive Integrated Regional Master Plan for Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor Final Report has been prepared by JICA.

A detailed Master Plan for Ponneri Node has also been prepared by JICA.

Node 2 & 3 : Tumakaru (KA) & Krishnapatnam (AP)

RfQ cum RfP for Selection of Consultant for consultancy services for Detailed Master Planning and Preliminary Engineering for Tumakuru and Krishnapatnam Node for Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) Project.[2]

Extension

Karnataka government has proposed to extend this corridor to Mangalore and reposition this corridor as a West seaport to East Seaport connectivity corridor. A new proposal has been put forward where the Corridor will have 2 seaports at the extreme ends and 3 international airports on the way, with Manufacturing industries setup in between. Mangalore has India's biggest Petrochemical complex, international air cargo facility, international airport, major seaport and located in an area which boasts of having highest literacy rate in India. Mangalore can be major export hub for Japanese companies for exports to countries in Africa and West Asia.

Sagarmala[3] project and related capacity and infrastructure enhancements are expected make add to the capacity of this corridor.[4]
