Charlie Craggs is a trans activist and the founder of award winning national campaign Nail Transphobia.[1][2] For her dedication and work, she has been recognised by The Guardian and the Independent as one of the most influential and inspirational LGBT people in the United Kingdom and ranked #1 on the Observer's 2016 New Radicals list.[3]

Education

In 2014, Craggs graduated from London College of Fashion with a Bachelor of the Arts in Creative Direction for Fashion. Prior to this, she completed her foundation degree at Central Saint Martins after achieving all A*s and A’s at A Level and GCSE.

Activism

After a trip to her GP about transitioning, Craggs realised how little awareness there was about transgender issues. [4] Such experiences, as well high rates of violence inflicted on transgender people and public misinformation, inspired her to begin what she calls 'gentle activism'. [5]

Craggs’ campaign, Nail Transphobia, began around two years ago. Initially, she developed the concept at university. Whilst giving a talk at the Victoria and Albert, she was approached by the curator who offered her to launch the campaign there. [6] In these pop-up sessions, Craggs will sit with an individual and chat to them to raise transvisibility as she does their nails.[7] After this, an image of the manicure will be uploaded to social media with the hashtag #NailTransphobia to further share the message. She also travels across the United Kingdom with a popup salon. Some of the notable institutions and organisations that she has collaborated with include the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum and Lush.

Due to the success of her work, she now uses the sales from her site to fund self-defence classes for other transwomen.
