Charles Tuke (cricketer, born 1858)

Charles Lawrence Tuke (3 August 1858 – 30 December 1929) was an English first-class cricketer active 1884–85 who played for Hawke's Bay in a single first-class match. He was born in Sittingbourne and died in Remuera, Auckland.[1] He was also a keen tennis player, playing in the first round of the New Zealand Championship in 1886, 1897, and 1901.[2] Tuke's brother Edward Henry Tuke also played cricket, for the minor county of Herefordshire.[3]

Tuke was born into a religious family, and was the fifth son of the Rev. Francis Edward Tuke, vicar of Borden in Kent. Tuke was educated at Haileybury College in England and at St John's College, Auckland. He took holy orders, serving in various capacities, notably as vicar of St. Augustine's Anglican Church in Napier. He was also an active freemason. Tuke and his wife (Mary, née Tiffen) had seven children, four boys and three girls.[4]
