Center for Contemporary Art "Tobacco Factory"

Center for Contemporary Art is a contemporary art museum in Rostov-on-Don. It is located on the territory of the old "Asmolov" workshops of OJSC "Donskoy Tabak" in the very center of the city, on Krasnoarmeyskaya street, 170. In 2010, it held the First South-Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art.

History

The history of the CIC "Tobacco Factory" began at the end of 2009 when, at the stage of preparation for the First South-Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art, an agreement was reached with business owners, which by 1,500 square meters. The Don Tobacco Factory, which has left its old buildings in the center of the city, will house sections of the Biennale "S-V-YA-Z-I Connection" and "Water Line".[1] A little later in the press there was information that special projects of the First South-Russian Biennale will be on display in the squares of old workshops called the Center for Contemporary Art "Tobacco Factory".[2]

Opening of the Center for Contemporary Art "Tobacco Factory" was held on May 24 in the framework of the first South-Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art. State Duma Deputy Ivan Savvidi, the owner of the building, in his speech at the opening of the Biennale, said: "To a certain extent, this is the sanation of the environment and the soul of man. We, professional tobacco growers, will regard this event as compensation for the physical damage that is done to human health".[3]

After the opening of the Biennale, the press reported that the AGROCOM Group planned to provide the premises of the former tobacco factory to the stationary Center for Contemporary Arts. Moreover, on the official website of the Agrocom group on June 4, 2010, a press release of the group appeared, which said: "Today, the old Tobacco building has been reborn. At the end of the Biennale, the permanent center of contemporary art "Tabachnaya Fabrika" is located in the workshops. Participation in significant urban and regional projects is one of the main areas of social responsibility of the Agrocom Group.[4]

On the third floor of the tobacco factory, five of the 12 projects of the First South-Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art were located: "Dormitory District - 2", "S-V-Z-Z-I-Connection", "Restricted Zone. Video art "," Red corner "," Young mummies".

In October 2010, an exhibition of the German artist Christina Schnappenburg "Sculptures of Light" was held in the territory of the "Tobacco Factory" in the framework of the "Days of Germany" in Rostov-on-Don.[5]

This initiative to create the Center for Contemporary Art has not been continued.
