Cebu Normal University is a state research university in the Philippines. It was established in 1902 as a provincial normal school and a branch of the Philippine Normal School. It became an independent institution in 1924, a chartered college in 1976, and a university in 1998. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Cebu.

CNU has three campuses, the main campus in Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City and two extension campuses in Medellin and Balamban.

Overview

Cebu Normal University

The CNU was established in 1902 as a summer institute of the Philippine Normal University (PNS, then a normal school). It was then called as "Cebu Normal School". In 1915, the school became an adjunct to the then Cebu Provincial High School. In 1924, the school became independent of PNS.

It was once used as headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army, using its rooms as prison cells and torture chambers. The school was then renamed to "Cebu Normal College" in 1966, then to "Cebu State College" in 1976. The 1980s to the 1990s saw a rapid increase in the school’s population and new buildings. These structures now house the three big colleges of the school: College of Teacher Education (CTE), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), and the College of Nursing (CN), as well as the museum, the Integrated Laboratory School (ILS), the Graduate School (GS) and Balay Alumni.

On June 27, 1998, the school (then called Cebu State College) attained university status and was named Cebu Normal University (CNU) under Senate Bill 2320 signed by former President Fidel V. Ramos.

In 2008, CNU had two extension colleges in Medellin and Balamban, in Cebu. The university is Region 7's Center of Teacher Development and in August 2009 it became Region 7's right Nursing Excellence.

In February 2011, The College of Nursing and The College of Teacher Education were awarded the Level 4 Accreditation by the AACCUP (The Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines), being the first programs in the country to have been awarded such honors.

CNU during World War II

The CNU campus was used as headquarters of the Kempetai or Military Police of the Japanese Imperial Army during the second World War. Because of this, the administration building basement have been rumored to have ghosts of those who were killed by the Japanese.
