Catherine Ball

Dr. Catherine Ball is a businesswoman with a focus on environmental science and technology. Ball is currently operating a number of start up companies. [1] She is renowned for her work with drone technology advancement which has been a main source for her recent recognition. Ball and her team operated a drone that could fly hundreds of kilometers. They flew it off the west coast of Australia to study and track turtle habitats. During this 'same voyage' they found endangered animals that had not been seen for years.[2] This thought leadership is what landed her the 2015 Telestra Queensland Business Woman of the Year award.[3] Ball identifies as a representative for women in STEM.[4] She has degrees in environmental protection, ecology, and statistics and is a businesswoman making advancements in the technological field to help with environmental protection.[5]

Personal

Ball was born in UK, England, however considers herself an Aussie-at-heart, due to the 'amount of work' she has done in Australia.[6] At a young age, Ball had a wide exposure to different cultures and experiences, due to traveling for school. At the age of 13 she attended school in France and at the age of 18 in Zambia.[7] Ball attributes her diverse career choices to these experiences and opportunities she had growing up.[8] At the age of 30 she moved to Australia all by herself. What encouraged Ball to take this next step in her life was her strong belief in the phrase "feeling the fear and doing it anyways".[9]

Education

Catherine Ball first attended Higham Lane where she received her GCSEs from 1991 through 1995. Then she later went on to King Edward VI College where she had her A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and French.[10] Ball received her Bachelors in Science with honors in Environmental Protection at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1998 through 2002.[11] She went on to complete her Ph.D in Ecology and Statistics at the same university in 2008; while also studying Microbial Ecology, Molecular Biology, Statistics and Modeling.[12]

Awards

Ball was recognized with the 2015 Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year award. She was also on the Q Magazine's "2015 Queensland 50 Best and Bright" list. She was on the Australian Financial Review BOSS Magazine's "2015 Young Executives of the Year."
