Holding two passports, she moved to Salt Lake City after contacting Matt Kooreman, since 2014 coach of the USA longtrack team. As of 2018, she still studies medicine remotely at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.[3]

2018 Olympics

Schoutens qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics by winning the national title at the United States Olympic Trials at the 3,000 meter distance.[6] She also won the title at the 5,000 meter distance.[7] Schoutens elected to compete for the United States over the Netherlands.[8] Carlijn won a bronze medal in the team pursuit after skating in the semi-final race to help her team.
