Career Suicide, released on October 9, 2007 through Nitro Records, is the third studio album from the Massachusetts based melodic hardcore band A Wilhelm Scream.


Unlike its predecessor, Ruiner, Career Suicide features A Wilhelm Scream playing faster, more upbeat music while still maintaining their signature technical and progressive style. It was the first album by the band to feature guitar solos on multiple tracks, all of which were performed by Trevor Reilly. Lyrically the album covers topics such as the entertainment industry, formative life experiences, and growing up in the band’s hometown of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The album also marks the debut for bassist Brian Robinson, who has since gone on to play on all the band's subsequent releases.

Although Career Suicide is the band’s shortest album in running time, the song “We Built This City (On Debts and Booze)” is the longest song the band has written to date, clocking in at over five minutes.

Release

On August 9, 2007, Career Suicide was announced for release, and the album's track listing was revealed.[1] In August, the band supported Strung Out on their North American tour.[2] "The Horse" and "These Dead Streets" were posted on the band's Myspace on October 2.[3] The album was released on October 9.[4] In October, the group went on a US tour with Only Crime and The Swellers.[3] On October 25, "Die While We're Young" was made available for free download via Fuse's website.[5] On October 30, a music video was released for "Die While We're Young" via Alternative Press.[6] In November and December, the band went on tour alongside the Fall of Troy and Schoolyard Heroes.[7] Following a UK tour, the band toured across the US in March and April 2008 alongside the Unseen.[8] On April 1, a music video was released for "I Wipe My Ass with Showbiz". According to Alternative Press, the video "takes a shot at fashioned-obsessed music business executives".[9] The band made an appearance at The Fest.[10] On December 31, the band posted an outtake from the recording sessions, "The I Hate ___ Club", on their Myspace. Vocalist/guitarist Trevor Reilly said it was "easily in my top three of the Career Suicide session songs. Why was it left off the record you ask? Bill [Stevenson] and Jason [Livermore] said 'no hate club or route 40 on the record' and we said 'ok.'"[11] In January and February 2009, the band supported Streetlight Manifesto on their headlining tour of the US.[12]

It received mostly favorable reviews. Many critics in particular noted the impact of Brian Robinson, stating that he made his presence immediately impact the album while meshing seamlessly with the other members.

It was also voted the best album of 2007 by Punknews.org readers.[18]

  • On September 17, 2007 the final cut of the video for the song "5 to 9" was released via the Nitro Records webpage.[19]
  • On October 31, 2007 a video for the song "Die While We're Young" was released via the Nitro Records webpage. The video features footage from the band's recent European tour.
  • A video shooting for the song "I Wipe My Ass With Showbiz" was announced in a Myspace bulletin that detailed the video being shot at an undisclosed location, as well as at a show in Manchester, UK. This video was released on March 31, 2008 through the band's blog on MySpace.
