Capital Teas is an American specialty tea brand, based in Annapolis, MD,[1] which primarily sells premium loose tea and tea-related products. Capital Teas was founded in 2007[2], closed its last brick-and-mortar stores as of August 2018, and re-launched as an online and wholesale brand in October 2018.

History

Capital Teas is a leading American specialty tea brand sold throughout the United States and in select international locations. Founded in 2007, at its brick-and-mortar peak in 2017, the company had 23 stores in 8 states, but in a rapidly changing retail environment, it shuttered all of its stores as of August 2018 and in October 2018 re-opened as a strictly eCommerce tea provider. The mission of Capital Teas is to educate people and inspire lives through the wonders of tea, one cup at a time. Capital Teas has been recognized as having the #1 specialty tea selection for consumers and was twice recently recognized as a member of the Inc. 5000 list of the nation’s fastest growing private companies (#1686 in 2016 and #1100 in 2017).

In March 2014, Capital Teas received a $5 million investment round from Pear Tree Partners, based in Massachusetts, to help grow its business.[3] Subsequently, Capital Teas received an additional $6 million investment round in November 2015. By mid-2017, the company had grown to 23 stores (22 "Capital Teas" stores and one off-brand store). However, in a rapidly changing retail environment, in July 2017, it began down-sizing its brick-and-mortar presence to its most profitable stores as the retail world began to focus heavily on e-commerce, and in August 2018, the company completely closed all of its stores. In October 2018, one of the brand's original co-founders, Peter Martino, partnered with new investors to relaunch Capital Teas strictly in e-Commerce and wholesale channels.

Capital Teas has been recognized as an innovator in the tea industry with products like their tea and alcohol infusions, such as Tea Lager Beer Enhancers and Vino Teano Wine Mixers.[4]
