Cape Henry Collegiate (formerly Cape Henry Collegiate School, also known as Cape Henry or CHCS) is a coeducational private day school in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

History

CHC was founded in 1924 by Helena Everett as the Everett School.[1] As the 1960s population of Virginia Beach rapidly expanded, the demand for a private day school increased as larger numbers of people were "seeking the suburban lifestyle."[2] In 1971, Arthur and Miriam Peregoff purchased the original Everett School and changed its name to Cape Henry Collegiate School. Miriam Peregoff thought that, given the population growth in Virginia Beach, "there would be enough support for an academically-based private school."[2]

Tuition (2018-19 school year) ranges from $12,210 in Pre-Kindergarten to $20,360 in grades 9–12.

Academics

CHC focuses on STEM subjects and dedicated a new science center in the Fall of 2007.[3] The school subsequently made the local news when the seismograph in the school's science center detected earthquakes in Martinique and elsewhere.[4]

In 2011, CHC science teacher Debra Duffy was one of 19 high school teachers selected nationally to spend two weeks on Robert Ballard's research ship, the Nautilus, as part of a program funded by the University of Rhode Island, where Ballard is the director of ocean exploration. CHC's technology department set up a center at CHC where Duffy's students could watch her teach her classes from aboard the vessel. CHC senior Courtney Paphites accompanied Duffy on the trip.[5]

The school is also part of the Hybrid Learning Consortium.[6] It creates a globalized learning community offering a diverse variety of online courses to students around the world.

Athletics

In the fall of 2008, CHC finished at the top of the TCIS in field hockey, girls' tennis and both male and female volleyball. In addition, CHC won two private school state championships in 2008. In 2010, the Boys Baseball Team won their first ever State Championship. In 2011 the girls field hockey, and volleyball teams won the State Championship.

Point guard Devon Hall played for CHC. He was scheduled to graduate in 2014 and was expected to be a top college basketball prospect then. However, he graduated early, and in July 2012 Hall committed to play for the University of Virginia in the Fall of 2013.[7]
