Cambridge Associates is an investment consulting company based in the United States providing investment advisory and research services to institutional investors, foundations and endowments, private clients, and corporate and government entities.

History

Cambridge Associates was founded by Harvard College roommates Hunter Lewis and James Bailey in 1973.[1]

Business

Cambridge Associates clients include the NFL Pension Funds, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Mayo Clinic, WWF, National Geographic, the Smithsonian Foundation, the Council on Foreign Relations, Yale University, Harvard University, MIT, Bryn Mawr College, Swarthmore College, Phillips Exeter Academy, and the Knight Foundation.[2][3][4][5]

The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and Reuters utilize Cambridge Associates research.[6][7]

Cambridge Associates had $4.633 trillion in total global assets under advisement as of June 2015, down 2% from the same period a year earlier.[8][9]

Cambridge Associates also became known for its stated intention of avoiding the conflicts of interest endemic to Wall Street,[6] conflicts that became especially apparent during the financial crisis of 2007–2008. Cambridge Associates has said that its mode of “conflict free” services represents an important innovation in American finance.[2]

In 2017, the firm laid off 3% of its workforce in the investment staff, performance reporting and data collection areas in order to more closely focus on its asset management operations.[10]

Cambridge Associates has offices in London, Washington DC, Boston, Dallas, San Francisco, Menlo Park, Beijing, Singapore, Sydney, and Toronto.[11]

Investment services

It offers investment consulting, outsourced portfolio solutions, research services and tools, and performance monitoring across various asset classes. The company also provides services in areas, such as investment objectives, asset allocation, investment management structures and guidelines, investment manager selection and evaluation, and performance monitoring.[12]
