History

Calm was founded in 2012 by Michael Acton Smith and Alex Tew.[5] Smith founded the children's entertainment company Mind Candy and creating the online game Moshi Monsters.[6][7] Tew launched his first startup company The Million Dollar Homepage in 2005.[8] Tew and Smith later develop their idea of an online meditation product.[9]

As of 2017, Calm had raised $1.5M in angel investments and was run by a small team in San Francisco.[10]

Calm was Apple's "App of the Year" in 2017.[10]

The mobile app has had over 30 million downloads.[1]

Product

Calm produces mindfulness meditation products, which are accessible to users through various channels: the company’s website, a book, and its primary product, a mindfulness meditation app, available on iPhone and Android devices.[11][12]

The app features both meditation tools and sleep aids. The meditation area of Calm offers a quick breathing exercise, a daily meditation that teaches mindfulness, several multi-day programs targeting specific issues or goals, and unguided and guided meditation sessions.[13][14]

The “Sleep” area of the app gives users access to an audio feature called Sleep Storiesbedtime stories for adults. On December 1, 2016, Calm launched an initial range of 23 different sleep-inducing stories, mixing words, music and sound-effects, with the aim of helping adult listeners to sleep.[15]
