Café Barbera is an Italian coffeehouse and fast casual dining franchise registered with the International Franchise Association (IFA).[1] It operates franchises in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, South America and the United States. The franchise began in Dubai in 2004 and is named after the first Café Barbera founded by Domenico Barbera in 1870 in Southern Italy.

Business concept

Domenico Barbera established his coffee roasting business, named Caffé Barbera, in 1870 in Messina,[2] Southern Italy. In Europe, it is one of the five oldest coffee companies in Europe. Café Barbera opened its first Corporate coffeehouse in Dubai in 2004. The first franchisee location opened in Dubai in 2008.

Franchise operations

Café Barbera became a member of the International Franchise Association in 2015. It has locations in Italy, Brazil, the United States, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, Ukraine, the UK, the Philippines, Pakistan, Sudan and Somalia. The company opened its first UAE coffee house location in Dubai in 2004 and had eight stores in 2015.[3] Training for Middle East franchise holders is held in Dubai.[4][5] The company expanded into Malaysia in 2010. As of December 2015, the first Italian coffee house patterned after the franchise model opened in 2012. There were three locations in Italy by the end of 2015.

In 2013, the first Brazilian franchised Café Barbera opened.[6] There were two locations in Brazil at the end of 2015. The company also opened its first coffee shops in Sudan in 2013. The first Iraqi Café Barbera opened in 2014. The franchisor closed 2015 with four coffee houses in Iraq.

Café Barbera entered Pakistan[7] in 2015 with two locations in the country. Between 2016 and 2018 Stores have been opened in United States,[8] Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Somalia[9], Jordan, UAE and the United Kingdom in 2016.

Cafe Barbera added a franchise in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico in February 2017.

New stores are scheduled to open in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Morocco and the UAE during 2018-2019.
