Bryochoerus intermedius is a species of tardigrades of the family Echiniscidae. It was once the only species of Bryochoerus,[1] but is now joined there by Bryochoerus liupanensis.

The species are founded in Germany, Austria, Brazil, Australia and the island of Hawai'i. The species were named by James Murray in 1910 as Echiniscus intermedius and the genus name was named by Ernesto Marcus in 1936 who later renamed it.

Etymology

The specific name of Bryochoerus is Greek bryo- and choeros (pig, pork) as the species is nearly shaped like a pig. The species etymology is Latin for between the middle.

Subspecies

It has three subspecies. The second one was first placed as a species of Bryodelphax as Bryodelphax intermedius var. hawaiicus named by Gustav Thulin in 1928, another one was first named as Echiniscus intermedius as Echiniscus intermedius laevis were named by Ernesto Marcus in 1936.

According to Degma, Bertolani and Guidetti[1]

  • Bryochoerus intermedius intermedius (Murray, 1910), founded in Germany and Austria - mainly in the Alps
  • Bryochoerus intermedius hawaiicus (Thulin, 1928) founded in Hawaii
  • Bryochoerus intermedius laevis (Marcus, 1936) of Australia and Brazil
