BrowserCMS is an open source web content management system written in Ruby built as a Ruby on Rails Engine. It was created by BrowserMedia. Its main goal is to serve three distinct user groups:[1]

  • Non-technical clients who need to maintain their website content.
  • Designers who want to build elegantly designed sites for clients with few constraints on their page layout and design.
  • Rails Developers who want a CMS that can be extended using common Rails conventions.

It is distributed via RubyGems. There are over 30 available modules developed by the community and commercial companies.[2] It can be extended using standard rails conventions via the use of Engine, ActiveRecord Models and controllers.

History

BrowserCMS originally started as a commercial Java project at BrowserMedia in 2003. For the 3.0 release, it was rebuilt using Ruby on Rails and released as an open source project[3] in June 2009 under an LGPL license.[4] It is among the top 5 most popular Rails based CMS's.[5]
