Brooke High School is a public high school in Wellsburg, West Virginia, United States. It is the only high school in the Brooke County School District. Athletic teams compete as the Brooke Bruins in the WVSSAC Class AAA as well as the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.

History

Brooke High School was established in 1969 from the consolidation of Follansbee High School, Wellsburg High School, and Bethany High School.[3]

Athletics

Basketball

The Bruins have five basketball teams, both boys and girls. Boys play freshman, JV and varsity while girls compete in JV and varsity.

The most infamous play in Brooke basketball history came in 1983, when Brooke lost at home to Weir High School during the state tournament sectionals. Current BHS principal Tim Pannett made a last-second, game-winning bucket that was waved off by an official who called Pannett for an offensive foul.

The boys' varsity basketball team won the WV AAA championship in 1987, led by Bobby "Honey" Hoenig, "Razzle Dazzle" Charlie Basil, head coach Dave "Easy" Reitter, and statistician John Townsend.

Kris Guio (4th all-time total points w/1068, 4th in assists w/499, 1st in assists w/ 362, 19th single season points w/ 381). Kris as a 4 year varsity letterman and just a freshman when the Bruins completed the '87 run in winning the State Title. When it was all said and done, Guio was within top 5 in all stats making a strong debate as possibly 'The Goat' and best Athlete and B-ball player ever to put on a Brooke Bruin jersey.

Reitter now a member of the elite club of champion coaches forever placed himself in the books with 3 time state champion and friend coach Sam Andy of Wheeling Park and other legendary coaches in WV. Matt Gaudio, Brooke's all-time leader in total points with 1847, twice most points in a single season w/ 607 n 568 n sophomore year 6th in points with 464,

&In the mid-1980s, the boys basketball team were led by the twin towers, Joe Bowman (aka "The Human Smokestack") and George "the Flying Buttress" Cole. Both Bowman and Cole were 6 ft 8 in tall.

Over the course of his 40 year rein as head coach, Reitter had the pleasure of coaching both of his sons B.J ( 6th all-time 3 pt w/61, & 9th all-time assists w/186 (PG #12) and Brent (SG #21). Brent Reitter ( 3rd all-time in 3's w/122, 2nd in school history in assists w/ 325, 14th leading scorer w/765 total points, & 22nd most points single season w/366). Brent also went on to set the school record for most three point field goals in a single season with 81 made from behind the arc. Other notable hoops standouts at Brooke include Chad Cantor (4th 3pt fg w/ 116, 11th total points w/ 803, 17th all-time assists w/151, & 14th points single season w/392), Joe Ierise ( 18th points single season w/ t& 22nd all-time points w/549), Justin Baker ( 16th in points w/659, 25th in rebounds w/225, 25th in assists w/ 112, & 8th in made 3 pointers w/ 38), Jacob Kendrick (5th leading scorer in BHS history w/ 1045 pts, 2nd all-time rebounds w/ 615, 21st single season points w/ 371), Ryan Koster (8th all-time scoring w/ 906, 1st in 3 point field goals w/154, 6th in assists w/241, 16th in rebounds w/265) Ryan Schwertfegerfeger(3rd all-time points w/1081, 10th in rebounds w/363, 9th single season points w/420, 3rd in assists w/ 306, & 2nd all-time in Trey's w/ 124), Chris Ewusiak *dnp senior year injured knee ( 18th all-time points w/617 & 15th in boards w/ 294), Kevin Ewusiak (7th all-time leader in points w/ 926, 9th points in a single season w/ 416 & 6th in rebounds w/ 450), George Slanchik (6th all-time in 3 pointers w/ 53, & 7th in assists w/ 202), Ralphie Perito ( 5th in assists w/ 244), Mark Ceglie ( 17th points in single season w/384, 13th in total points w/ 778, & 5th all-time leading rebounder w/ 450) , Les Shaffer ( 15th total points w/ 665, 5th all-time single season w/489).

Cheerleading

Perhaps the highlight of the school is the Brooke High School Cheerleading program. Through the years, the various varsity squads have earned the school a record-setting 13 West Virginia state titles and 25 Region 1 championships. Brooke has also competed in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Cheerleading championship winning various titles - most recently in 2011.

Football

Brooke High School won the WV AAA championship in 1985, 1987, and 1990, under the leadership of head coach Paul "Bud" Billiard and assistant coaches Perry West, Harry Alward, Randy Weppler, Bill Ewusiak, Dave Reitter, and Ed Wohnhas.

1994 BHS graduate Mac McLean was hired as head football coach in July 2014 to help restart the Bruin program after decades of dormancy.
