Brahmanbaria Medical College (BMC) (Bengali: ব্রাহ্মণবাডি়যা় মেডিকেল কলেজ) is a private university medical school which began educating students in 2013. The college is located in Ghatura, Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila, Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh, and is affiliated with University of Chittagong as a constituent college.

BMC offers a five-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. One-year internships after graduation are common, but not compulsory for all graduates. The degree is recognised by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC).

The college building is attached to a 250-bed hospital, which also publishes a formal medical journal: Brahmanbaria Medical College Journal.

History

Brahmanbaria Medical College (BMC) was established in 2010 and its first class of students matriculated in the 2013–14 academic year when the school was granted affiliation with the University of Chittagong.[2] The first incoming class consisted of 50 students, but has since grown to 80 enrolled students.

Campus

The college is located in Brahmanbaria Sadar, Brahmanbaria. There is a strict no-smoking policy on college property.[3] The hospital is equipped with an ambulance service and a hemodialysis unit which operates at all hours of the day. Due to space limitations, professors and consultants provide services outdoors during daylight hours; if the patient is in need of extra care or more assistance, they are sent inside.[4]

Organization and administration

The college is affiliated with Chittagong University.[5] The chairman of the college is Md. Abu Sayed. The principal is Prof. Brig. Gen. (retired) Md. Shafiqul Islam.[6]

Academics and admissions

In October 2014, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare capped admission and tuition fees at private medical colleges at 1,990,000 Bangladeshi taka (US$25,142 as of 2017) total for their five-year courses.[7]

Admission for Bangladeshis to the MBBS programme at all medical colleges in Bangladesh (government and private) is conducted centrally by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). It administers a written multiple choice question exam simultaneously throughout the country. Candidates are admitted based primarily on their score on this test, although grades at Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) level also play a part. Seats are reserved, according to quotas set by the DGHS, for children of freedom fighters and for students from underprivileged backgrounds.[8]
