"Boombayah" (Hangul: 붐바야; RR: Bumbaya) is the debut single of South Korean girl group Black Pink. It was released coupled with "Whistle" and was released in titled "Square One", on August 8, 2016 by YG Entertainment and distributed by KT Music. "Boombayah" topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart in the first week of sales.

Background and release

"Boombayah" was released on August 8, 2016 at 8 p.m. KST as a digital single titled "Square One", coupled with "Whistle", through various digital music portals in South Korea.[3][1]

Music video

The music video for "Boombayah" was directed by Seo Hyun-seung,[4] and it was released on Black Pink's official YouTube channel on August 8, 2016.[5][6]

As of July 10, 2018, "Boombayah" has accrued 343 million views, while "Whistle" has 228 million. All of Black Pink's live performances have each over one million views, the highest being their debut stage for "Boombayah" on SBS's Inkigayo with over thirty million views. The music video for "Boombayah" also reached 50 million views on YouTube faster than any other debut music video, reaching the milestone nine weeks after its release.[7]

On January 31, 2017, the music video for "Boombayah" hit 100 million views on YouTube, which makes Black Pink the fifth K-pop girl group to reach 100 million views, as well as the fastest debut music video of any K-pop act to reach this milestone. As of February 24, 2018, the music video has reached over 260 million views.[8] Later in January 2018, the music video became the most viewed debut MV by a K-pop group on YouTube.[9][10]

Promotion

Black Pink promoted "Boombayah" at their debut stage on SBS's Inkigayo on August 14, 2016.[11][12] They subsequently promoted the song for the two following weeks on Inkigayo,[13][14] and also performed "Boombayah" at the 26th Seoul Music Awards on January 19, 2017.[15]

Critical reception

Billboard K-Town's Jeff Benjamin said that they "embrace the hip-hop sensibilities and club-ready sounds with which their seniors gained an international following", referring to their labelmates Psy, BIGBANG and 2NE1. He said, "Boombayah" has "booming, exotic beats"[16]

Commercial performance

"Boombayah" entered at number 7 with 88,215 downloads sold and 1,866,737 streams in South Korea.[17][18][19]

In the US, "Boombayah" topped Billboard's World Digital Songs for the week August 27, 2016[20][21] In its second week within the chart, "Whistle" placed at number 3 for the week September 3, 2016.[22]
