Boogie (rapper)

Boogie (born Anthony Dixson[1][2]) is an American hip-hop artist from Compton, California.[2] He is known for his ability to bring to life real life experiences in his music.[1]

Life

Boogie grew up in Compton, California and was a member of the church choir.[2] His son, Darius, was born June 24, 2009, and was the catalyst for him to take music more seriously.[3] In 2010, he enrolled in recording courses at Long Beach City College, using financial aid money to purchases recording equipment.[4]

Musical career

Boogie’s musical career started when he joined the First Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church choir[5] in 8th grade under the guidance of his mother.[2][6] While a member of the choir, he was introduced to gangbanging and slowly began to make the transition from gospel, to gospel rap to mainstream rap.[6][1]

On June 24, 2014, he released his debut mixtape Thirst 48, which chronicled his life and struggles.[7][2] A year later, his debut was followed by his breakthrough mixtape The Reach, was released on June 24.[2] He signed a deal with Interscope Records in 2015  and in October 2017, Eminem signed Boogie to Shady Records.[2][7]

His break out single, “Oh My” was released in 2015 and produced by Jahlil Beats.[8][9]

In 2016, Boogie released Thirst 48, Pt. II via Interscope Records,[2] a continuation of his debut mixtape from 2014 that also deals with new themes such as Millennial reliance on social media.[10] He was featured in the digital 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards Detroit Cypher and made an appearance behind Eminem in his solo freestyle.[9][2]

His first release from Shady Records was “Violence,” a collaboration with Masego,[11] in December 2017. The release was followed up by two more songs in 2018 - “Self Destruction” in May[12][13] and “Deja Vu” in August.[14] Boogie’s still untitled new album is expected to drop in fall 2018.[15] He has gained praise from Rihanna, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar.[16][17][18][9][19]

Boogie is currently managed by LVRN.

In August 2018, Boogie participated in an ad for Snickers “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” campaign alongside Elton John.[20]
