The blue-throated bee-eater (Merops viridis) is a species of bird in the bee-eater family. It is found in south-east Asia in its natural habitat of subtropical or tropical mangrove forests.

Taxonomy and systematics

This species is alternatively named the chestnut-headed bee eater but should not be confused with the species of that name (Merops leschenaulti).

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized:[2]

  • M. v. viridis - Linnaeus, 1758: Found from southern China to Indochina and the Greater Sundas
  • Rufous-crowned bee-eater (M. v. americanus) - Statius Müller, PL, 1776: Considered by some authorities as a separate species. Found in the Philippines

In captivity

This species is very rare in captivity. The Weltvogelpark Walsrode in Germany kept this species between 1999 & 2004.
