Legends of the Superheroes

In 1979, the character appeared in two television specials Legends of the Superheroes,[1] where she was portrayed by Danuta Wesley. The special featured a host of DC comic characters, including Batman, portrayed by Adam West.

Birds of Prey

In 2002 Warner Bros. produced a short-lived television series Birds of Prey, broadcast on The WB. Set in New Gotham City several years after the city has been apparently abandoned by Batman, it featured the characters of Helena Kyle / Huntress and Barbara Gordon / Oracle, alongside a teenage Dinah Redmond, (a re-imagined version of the Black Canary) who had psychic abilities.[2] The character of Dinah was played by Rachel Skarsten.

Dinah's mother Carolyn Lance, portrayed by Lori Loughlin appeared in the series as a retired superhero formerly known as the Black Canary, who was the estranged from her daughter.[3] Carolyn had the 'Canary Cry', which was activated by whistling, rather than screaming. The series suggests that Dinah may have inherited this ability from her mother, but this is never explored.

The series ran for thirteen episodes before being cancelled due to falling ratings.

Smallville

Black Canary featured in the long running The CW series Smallville several times from the seventh season onwards, portrayed by Alaina Huffman.[4]

In the series, she wore a long brunette wig, while acting as a controversial conservative columnist and talk-show host for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. By night, she used her metahuman ultrasonic scream to become a vigilante/mercenary. She was initially employed by Lex Luthor to capture the Green Arrow, who she believed to be a terrorist. She was later convinced that Luthor was lying to her, and Oliver asked her to join his team, Justice League.[5] Black Canary helped in the search for Clark at the start of season 8,[6] and agreed the group should disband once their identies were exposed. However, she returned later in the season to help bring down Doomsday.[7]

In the season nine finale,[8] Dinah rejoined the League in order to help in the war against the Kandorians. Her final appearance in the series saw her and the other heroes captured and put into a virtual reality stasis by the Vigilante Registration Agency (VRA). She fought alongside Oliver and Chloe Sullivan to free the others.[9]

In addition, it is further suggested in the series that another woman had been a member of the Justice Society of America some decades previously under the name Black Canary.[10]

Arrowverse

Dinah Laurel Lance (Earth-1)

Dinah Laurel Lance, portrayed by Katie Cassidy, is first introduced in Arrow.[11] Now an attorney, this version (referred to by her middle name) is Oliver Queen’s ex-girlfriend, and Detective Quentin Lance's older daughter.[12] The character also appears in a few episodes of The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow[13] and Vixen, all set in the same shared universe.

First appearing in the pilot episode, Laurel is stunned to see Oliver return after being presumed dead for five years, but is still angry with him for cheating on her with her younger sister who was aboard the Queen's Gambit when it sank, and blames Oliver for her apparent death. Now a changed man, Oliver still cares for Laurel and had kept a picture of her during the time away. Over season one's course, Laurel pursues a relationship with Tommy Merlyn (Oliver's best friend) while also trying to forgive Oliver's betrayal and salvage their friendship.[14] She works with The Hood at times, unaware that the vigilante is actually Oliver.[15][16] Laurel rekindles her relationship with Oliver after Tommy breaks up with her.[17] Tommy dies saving Laurel’s life from a collapsing building during The Undertaking.[18]

In season two, Laurel is now an Assistant District Attorney,[19] but also struggles with Tommy’s death leading her to fight her own battles with alcoholism and use of prescription drugs.[20][21] Laurel later learns that her sister is alive[22] and later figures out that both Sara and Oliver are the vigilantes, The Canary and The Arrow, respectively.[23] Initially angry, Laurel eventually reconciles with Sara.

In season three, Laurel witnesses Sara's murder and resolves to become a vigilante to find her killer and to help people as she did.[24][25] This leads her to begin combat training with Ted Grant,[26] and later Nyssa al Ghul.[27] Laurel eventually takes over her sister’s mantle as the Black Canary, officially joining Oliver’s team.[28][29] As Black Canary, she uses a black side-handle baton as her trademark weapon and later uses an updated version of her sister’s sonic "Canary Cry" device designed by Cisco Ramon.

In season four, Laurel is shown continuing vigilantism as a full-fledged member of Team Arrow, along with John Diggle / Spartan and Thea Queen / Thea Queen / Speedy in the absence of Oliver who, after a period of 5 months retiring as the Arrow, returns as the Green Arrow.[30] Soon Laurel learns about the Lazarus Pit and its power and attempts to resurrect Sara,[31] which succeeds with the help of John Constantine (Oliver's ally).[32][33] After Sara's resurrection, Laurel helps Sara start a new life and convinces her sister to join Rip Hunter's team. Laurel is eventually murdered by H.I.V.E. leader Damien Dhark in retaliation for Quentin testifying.[34] Moments before her death, Laurel tells Oliver that he will always be the love of her life. She also asks Oliver to keep a promise (which is not revealed until season five).[35] Oliver reveals Laurel's identity at her funeral to stop Evelyn Sharp's impersonation from inadvertently labeling Black Canary a criminal in the eyes of public.[36] Laurel's death is avenged by Oliver when he kills Dhark in season 4 finale.

In season five, Oliver, as the mayor of Star City, unveils a statue to honor Laurel's legacy. Her last words to Oliver are revealed as to have somebody else carry on the "Canary" mantle, leading to Dinah Drake as the new Black Canary. In the 100th episode "Invasion!", Laurel is seen alive and engaged to Oliver in a dream-state world where Oliver never got on board the Queen's Gambit.[37] Laurel's Black Canary statue is destroyed during a fight between Team Arrow and Laurel's Earth-2 evil doppelganger, Black Siren.

In season six, Black Siren eventually goes public as "Laurel Lance", after being continually pursued by Quentin.

Sara Lance

Caity Lotz portrays Sara Lance, sister of Laurel Lance. The character was originally portrayed by Jacqueline MacInnes Wood in the pilot episode of Arrow,[12] before being recast as a recurring character in subsequent seasons of Arrow. The character is one of the lead characters in the spin-off series Legends of Tomorrow, and also appears in crossover episodes with other shows set in the same universe.

Sara is introduced as Laurel Lance’s younger sister, who was sleeping with Oliver Queen (Laurel’s then boyfriend), during the boating accident that presumably killed them both.[12] In Arrow season 2, it is revealed that Sara actually survived the accident and was rescued by Dr. Anthony Ivo.[38] As revealed in the flashbacks, she met Oliver again on the Amazo, and was with him on Lian Yu also, for a period of time. After the Amazo is sunk, Sara is once more assumed dead by Oliver as she presumably drowns.[39] But it is further revealed that she was eventually rescued by Nyssa al Ghul of the League of Assassins, and they got romantically involved. The league trained Sara into becoming an assassin and gave her the name Ta-er al-Sahfer (Arabic: الطائر الأصفر Ta-er al-Sahfer) which means The Canary (Yellow Bird). As the Canary, Sara uses a sonic device and a pair of extendable batons which combine into a bō staff. After The Undertaking, Sara escapes the league and returns to Starling City to keep a close eye on her family. While living in The Glades to hide herself, Sara starts vigilantism by punishing "misogynistic" criminals. She befriends an orphan teenager named Sin, and is also reunited with Oliver who is now a vigilante. Nyssa attempts to bring Sara back to the League but eventually releases her,[22] as Sara reveals herself to her family and finally reconciles with Laurel.[40] Now publicly alive, Sara works at the Verdant as a bartender and also joins Oliver's team of vigilantes as the Canary. She later rejoins the League in order to use their forces to defeat Slade Wilson’s army.[39]

In Arrow season 3, Sara returns to Starling City to locate Malcolm Merlyn but is murdered. Sara's killer is later revealed to be Thea Queen, who was under Merlyn’s influence.[24] In the next season, Sara is brought back to life by the Lazarus Pit.[41] However the pit leaves her a soulless being due to the length of time she had been dead. Laurel and Oliver manage to restore her soul with the help of John Constantine.[33] Following the events of Legends of Yesterday,[42] Sara is recruited by Rip Hunter to become a member of his team, who travel through to time in order to stop Vandal Savage's rise to power in 2166. Initially reluctant to go, Sara is convinced by Laurel who tells her to be a hero in light, giving her a new costume & a new codename, White Canary.[43]

In Legends of Tomorrow season 1, Sara has various adventures across time with Hunter and his team, collectively calling themselves The Legends. She befriends Kendra Saunders and Leonard Snart, the latter of which becomes romantically infatuated with her.[44] During one of the missions, Sara gets stranded in 1950 for 2 years and joins the League of Assassins led by a young Ra's Al Ghul serves as a trainer to Talia al Ghul. Sara learns about Laurel's death when she returns to the present timeline, 5 months after she left. After Savage is killed, Sara returns to visit Laurel’s grave with Quentin who advises her to continue traveling with the Legends to honor Laurel's memory[45]

In season 2, Sara becomes the new captain during Rip's absence, who goes missing after the entire team gets temporarily scattered across time.[46]. Now on a mission to stop aberrations in Time, the Legends attempt to stop the Legion of Doom from rewriting Time with the Spear of Destiny.[47] During their encounters with the Legion, Sara attempts to murder Damien Dhark to avert her sister's fate. Finally, the Legends are reunited with Rip and they defeat the Legion by destroying the spear. Rip departs from the team after ratifying Sara as the new captain.

In season 3, the Legends take on a mission to find and correct anachronisms in Time caused due to the destruction of Spear of Destiny but they face opposition from the Time Bureau, an agency founded and co-directed by Rip to carry on the Time Masters' legacy. Eventually, the legends and the bureau end up working together in order to defeat a primordial Time Demon called Mallus. Sara falls for Ava Sharpe, an agent of the Time Bureau who is later reveled to be a humanoid clone from 2213.

Dinah Lance

Alex Kingston portrays Dinah Lance, Laurel and Sara's mother. After Sara's apparent death, Dinah left her husband and moved to Central City. Five years later, she returns to Starling City to make amends with her family and to reveal her theory that Sara is still alive.[48][49] In season 2, she returns to Starling when Laurel almost overdoses. She is later kidnapped by Nyssa al Ghul and finds out that Sara is indeed alive, reuniting her with her long lost daughter.[22] In season 3, Dinah is informed by Laurel that Sara was murdered, with Laurel promising she will avenge Sara's death.[50] In season 4, Dinah learns that Sara has returned once more after she calls her. She later returns to Star City when Laurel is killed and attends her funeral, learning that she was the Black Canary.[36]

Evelyn Sharp

Madison McLaughlin portrays Evelyn Crawford Sharp. In season 4 episode "Canary Cry", after Laurel is killed by Damien Darhk, Evelyn steals Laurel's canary cry collar, designs her own costume and begins targeting H.I.V.E. as Black Canary. It is revealed that she resents Green Arrow for not saving her family members, who were imprisoned and later killed by H.I.V.E.[51] She targets Darhk's wife Ruve Adams and attempts to shoot her in public but Oliver finally talks her out of her vendetta. Evelyn's actions inadvertently brand Black Canary as a criminal, but Oliver is able to save Laurel's image by revealing her identity to the public.[52] Evelyn returns in Season 5, now taking a new mantle of Artemis, and becomes a member of Team Arrow.[53] It is later revealed that Evelyn has betrayed the team and is in league with Prometheus.[54][55] She is last seen alive on Lian Yu in the season 5 finale, with her fate unknown.

Laurel Lance (Earth-2) / Black Siren

Katie Cassidy also portrays the Earth-2 version of Laurel Lance who is introduced as a villain known as Black Siren[56] (a callback to the Justice Guild of America member from Justice League animated series who herself was based on the Golden Age Black Canary).

First appearing in The Flash episode "Invincible", Siren is introduced as a member of Zoom's meta-human army. Unlike her Earth-1 counterpart, her sonic scream is a meta-human power that she uses to take down buildings on Zoom's order to distract Team Flash, but is stopped when Harry Wells uses a machine to render all Earth-2 meta-humans unconscious. She is then imprisoned at S.T.A.R. Labs.[57]

Black Siren re-appears in 5th season of Arrow, initially impersonating late Earth-1 counterpart, after being freed by Prometheus and forced to work for him.[58] Felicity discovers her true identity, and she is captured and imprisoned once more, this time at A.R.G.U.S. Oliver remains optimistic that he can help her find redemption someday.[59] Prometheus manages to break her out again and she assists him in kidnapping Oliver's team and take them to Lian Yu, where she is defeated by Dinah Drake and Quentin Lance.[60]

In season 6, it is revealed that Siren survived the explosion on Lian Yu and was rescued by Cayden James, former leader of the hacktivist organization Helix. She works as his henchman until his murder by the drug lord Ricardo Diaz, with whom she aligns herself later. Her rivalry with Laurel's successor Dinah Drake gets worse when Cayden James forces her to kill Dinah's boyfriend, Vincent Sobel. To save herself from Dinah's rage, Siren eventually goes public as Earth-1 "Laurel Lance" with a cover story of being kidnapped for two years by Damien Darhk's men (Episode: Doppelgänger). Having lost her father on her earth, Siren starts living with Quentin who, despite her reluctance to change, has been optimistic about her redemption which keeps puzzling her.[61] She ultimately goes against Diaz, but he abducts her. Quentin attempts to rescue her but Diaz shoots him, leading to his death.

Dinah Drake
Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake.
Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake.

Juliana Harkavy portrays Dinah Drake[62] , introduced in season 5 of Arrow to carry on the Black Canary mantle after Laurel Lance's death in the previous season.[59]

A meta-human, she is a former Central City Police Detective who used the name Tina Boland whilst undercover. She gained her sonic scream when the S.T.A.R. Labs Particle Accelerator exploded. She is discovered by Team Arrow in Hub City whilst they are searching for a new Black Canary. After they aid her in taking down the man who murdered her partner/lover, she accepts Oliver's offer.[63] She moves to Star City to become a member of Oliver's new team of recruits, and officially joins the Star City Police Department as a Detective.[64]

In season 6, Dinah is seen in a new costume while operating as the Black Canary. She discovers that the crime fighter operating in the city under the alias Vigilante is actually her former partner/lover, Vincent Sobel, who survived his murder because of the particle accelerator explosion and became a meta-human. Dinah initially suspects him because of his association with criminals like Cayden James and Ricardo Diaz but reconciles with him after knowing his true intentions, which leads to a big misunderstanding between her and Team Arrow. Her friendship with them deteriorates after Vince is killed by Earth-2 Laurel, leaving Dinah determined to get revenge for his death which reinforces a split between Oliver and new members of Team Arrow. Dinah branches out along with Rene and Curtis to operate as a new team for a while, but they all get back together in the end to battle Diaz. Dinah makes amends with Oliver and puts aside her hate for Laurel.

In the nineteenth episode of season 4 of The Flash, Fury Rogue, Siren-X made her debut. She is introduced trying to kill Citizen Cold. He is rescued by Cisco Ramon/Vibe and the Flash. She follows them to Earth 1. She is also portrayed by Katie Cassidy and looks very similar to Black Siren, except Siren-X has blue eyes. She is a metahuman assassin and unrequited lover of Oliver Queen's deceased doppelgänger Dark Arrow and surviving daughter of SS Sturmbannführer Quentin Lance. In addition to having combat trainings similar to her Earth-1 and Earth-2 counterparts, Siren-X has more experience and control with her powers than Black Siren's, able to use her abilities to manipulate sound wave around her, grants herself a superhuman hearing similar to Dark Arrow's wife Overgirl's (Supergirl's Earth-X counterpart) and able to determine her locations with echolocation.

Justice League and Justice League Unlimited

In the Justice League episode "Legends", the League teamed up with the Justice Guild of America in an alternate universe. The Guild member Black Siren was based on the Golden Age Black Canary, Dinah Drake. She was voiced by Jennifer Hale. The Siren's real name was given as Donna Nance on her tombstone.

Black Canary, as she appeared in Justice League Unlimited.

In the sequel series Justice League Unlimited, Black Canary was voiced by Morena Baccarin. She was first seen in a small cameo at the end of "Initiation", where her looks are enough to convince Green Arrow to stay in the League. She first appears as a main character in "The Cat and the Canary". She was vexed because her old mentor, Wildcat, had been obsessively engaging in underground fighting tournaments, and she convinced the smitten Green Arrow to help her convince Wildcat to return to the League. She and Green Arrow start a relationship, as seen in "Double Date", thereby paying homage to their famed romance in the comics. She also started a rivalry with Huntress. This version of Black Canary also appeared in the Justice League Unlimited spin-off comic book.[65]

Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Batman asks her to stay and keep watch of Black Manta, the Clock King, and Gorilla Grodd, after the first encounter with the Music Meister ("I'm The Music Meister"). She follows him instead, to the dismay of Green Arrow. The two fight against Music Meister ("The World is Mine!"), and Black Canary gets controlled again. Black Canary is also featured in the main plot of "The Golden Age of Justice!". Tired of being treated like a kid, Dinah Lance convinces Wildcat to have her help the rest of the Justice Society of America. Her mother, the original Black Canary, is seen in flashbacks, eventually dying after being crushed by debris during a fire. After Wildcat put his regret of being unable to save Dinah Drake behind him, they go off and help the rest of the Justice Society and Batman defeat Per Degaton. She returns in "The Mask of Matches Malone!", as one of the Birds of Prey.

Young Justice

Black Canary appears in Young Justice, voiced by Vanessa Marshall.[66] She is a recurring character and serves as the combat trainer for the members of Young Justice.[67] Series co-creator Greg Weisman has said her role on the show was in part because she is his favorite character in the DC universe.[68] In "Disordered," she holds a therapy session with each of the members of the team after what happened in Martian Manhunter's mind-training exercise. Black Canary's relationship with Green Arrow is touched upon in the series: in "Homefront," Red Tornado mentions he is taking over monitor duty at the Watchtower for Green Arrow because he has "a hot date with Black Canary". In the first-season finale, "Auld Acquaintance," she is brainwashed by Vandal Savage and attacks the kids, only to be knocked unconscious by Robin and Rocket. After being restrained and gagged, she is freed from her mind control and attempts to help the team free the other brainwashed JLA members. At the end of the episode, she and Ollie set out with Red Arrow (who is revealed to be a clone of Roy Harper) to find the real Roy. Black Canary returns in Young Justice: Invasion which is set five years after the previous series. In "Salvage," Black Canary assists Green Arrow, Guardian, Nightwing, and Kid Flash in Red Arrow's intervention where Red Arrow is still trying to find the real Roy Harper through whatever way possible.
