Bitch is a 2017 American dark comedy written and directed by Marianna Palka.

Plot

Jill Hart, a stay-at-home mom in the L.A. suburbs, has a breakdown. She attempts suicide, but fails and decides to take on the persona of a dog leaving her husband unprepared for parenthood. The unrelenting stress on the family drives her husband Bill towards drinking, Jill's sister to undertake the role as a new matriarch, and their four children as the new torments.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 68% based on 31 reviews, and an average rating of 6/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Bitch has an intriguing premise and a strong start that hints at greater things for writer-director-star Marianna Palka, even if its reach ultimately exceeds its grasp."[1] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 55 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[2]

Christy Lemire of Roger Ebert gave the film 1.5 stars out of 4 stating the film "has a bark that’s far worse than its bite".[3] John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter said the film was "an unfocused feminist allegory".[4] Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times said the film was a "satirical scream of rage against patriarchal prerogatives" and "has a vicious edge that can stifle your laughter".[5]
